Faust evaluation action

This monumental production of expressionist imagery has lavish sets and special effects, but the stunning visuals cannot hide the dramatic weakness of the middle passages (such as Faust - Eine deutsche Volkssage's pursuit of Margaret). It was remade in 1941 as All That Money Can Buy.
The beginning of "Faust - Eine deutsche Volkssage" is extremely shocking, and in the music of the magnificent Gounod opera we see the rising fire of hell. In the same world the angel pointed to the devil, the shape and lighting effects of the white-haired Faust - Eine deutsche Volkssage reflected the director's pursuit of composition and photography. Karl Hoffmann made the devil's huge figure cover with the lens of the overhead model. The restless music and his savageness deepened the pre-pandemic fears by half the screen now, and these plaster casts, thanks to the precise lighting rendering, made the film a model of expressionist photography. The camera position of this film has been very flexible. The cross shot upside down shows us the majesty of religion, but the huge devil still killed the priest who was praying desperately. After that, his behavior of burning the book reflected his doubts about God. The special effect of the halo of the lens that summons the devil at the intersection allows us to see the application of multiple exposures! Moreover, the film uses expressionist visual aesthetics such as the extensive use of backlighting and metering to let the audience see the key points at once, and can't help but shock. The music and the picture become one, creating the horror of the lightning and thunder of Fest. Especially the light in the devil's eyes fills people with fear. The films of the 1920s had such sensory stimulation, which is enough to prove the director's cleverness in creating. The instant appearance of the hourglass in Mephistopheles' hands and the transformation of the devil were all new in those days. It's very interesting to have a scene full of special effects in Faust - Eine deutsche Volkssage getting younger. And there's even a nude scene. The shot of the devil flying with the Faust - Eine deutsche Volkssage is poetic. The silhouette of a vulture is used for height, which completes the representation seen in the film. The grand wedding scene is no less than any epic blockbuster. The use of cross montage in the church allows us to see the power of faith and the fear of the devil. These pictures created by lighting are very delicate to convey the characters' environment and inner feelings.
The more lighthearted part of the film is the passage of Aunt Marshall, and the music is also comedic. And makes the Faust - Eine deutsche Volkssage and the maiden meet the poetic, full of love. This passage has some gaudy elements, which is criticized by the film historian Sadur. However, the film uses opera music to achieve a high degree of unity between the sound and the picture. In the film, the scene where the girl freezes to death in the snow has an illusion scene that is very tragic: the girl fantasizes about rocking the cradle to care for the baby, but it is actually Snow Slow. Slowly overwhelmed her, this picture has a huge impact on the soul. The overlapping shots of Faust - Eine deutsche Volkssage and the high-profile shots of the girl in the burning scene show the richness of the director's photographic language and his quest for it.
The film is full of redemption at the end. When God tells the devil that the only power to save the world comes from "love", a huge word of love appears on the screen, allowing the audience to see the possibility of salvation.

The opening scene is really powerful and impressive, but after the middle and late stages, only the fanfare of the brain is left, and it becomes vulnerable in an instant.
