When Bobby5 years old, his father died. Now he lives with his mean, selfish mother Elizabeth. On his birthday, his mother did not give him the bicycle he dreamed of, but a free book card. Bobby's mother bought her all kinds of beautiful clothes every three days, but she was unwilling to spend money to satisfy her son's little wish. However, the arrival of a mysterious tenant made Bobby's wish no longer so elusive. The strange old man who rents his attic is named Ted, and he promised to give Bobby one dollar a week on the condition that he read the newspaper for him every day. Bobby readily accepted the deal for the bicycle of his dream. Although some adults, including Bobby's mother, had a grudge against this strange old man, Bobby got along very well with him. From Ted, Bobby gained knowledge, courage, friendship, and things that would enable him to grow into a man. With Ted's help, Bobby got rid of a group of older children who always bullied him and Sally, and won Kylor's favor. In Bobby's emotional world, Ted may have filled the void left by his father
