Tonya Harding, a teenage girl, escaped the control of a sadistic mother, got rid of poverty, and became one of the top figure skaters in the world. In 1994, Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Giluleinjured Harding’s competitor Nancy Kerrigan before the Lillehammer Winter Olympics trialsknees. The ex-husband later claimed that Harding had instigated him to do so, but Harding denied this. In the end, the American Ice Association sentenced Harding, who was only 23 years old, to a lifetime ban from participating in any figure skating-related activities.
