The film is all edited with private recordings recorded by Marlon Brando during his lifetime. These tapes were left in the mansion where he lived before his death. This inspired director Stephen Riley to have the idea to make a film that uses Brando's own voice to tell his own experience. In addition to listening to tape recordings, Stephen Riley also read all the books about Marlon Brando, and visited people who had known Brando in New York and Los Angeles, including the daughter of the acting teacher, actor Harry Dean Stanton, personal friends, and family.
