The film is based on Lowell's comic of the same name. Producers Walter F. Parks and Laurie Macdonald bought the copyright in 1992 and found Ed Solo The door writes the script, and the two hope that the film will be as faithful to the original as possible. Barry Sonnenfeld, who successfully directed "The Adams Family" and "The Values of the Adams Family", was initially unable to be the director of the film because of "The Shorty". Parks and Macdonald immediately found Rice who remakes "34 Street Miracle" Mayfield, but after watching the film, the two thought that Mayfield was not suitable for directing the film, so they had to postpone the shooting in order to win Sonanfield.
The creation of the first draft of the film's script was kept confidential, and the location of the story was changed from Kansas to Washington, DC and Nevada. Sonanfeld finally decided to let the film's story unfold in New York City, because he believes that New Yorkers can tolerate aliens who behave strangely, and many of the buildings in the city resemble flying saucers and rocket ships. When designing the MIB headquarters, Art Director Bo Verch fully borrowed from the terminal building designed by Finnish architectfor JFK International Airport. Since MIB was established in the 1960s, Verch adopted the Architectural style.
Most of the special effects in the film were completed by Industrial Light and Magic. Rick Baker, who leads the special effects team, said that this film is the most complicated film he has ever taken since he started his career, because he had to combine director Sonanfeld and producer Steven Spear Berg's ideas are fully integrated. Filming of the film started in March 1996. It was not until five months later that the crew realized that the ending was not exciting enough, and then made a lot of changes. Baker also abandoned the electronic model of insect aliens in favor of computer special effects.
