Ruthattends the patriarchal Harvard Law School, where both male students and teachers are sexist, but her husband Martinkeeps encouraging her not to give up becoming a lawyer dream, because he thinks Ruth is smarter than all the male students, including himself.
After the birth of their first child, Martin developed testicular cancer and likely would not graduate, so Ruth started taking classes for him. After Martin recovered, she found a job in New York, and Ruth hopes to transfer to Columbia University to complete her studies. She and her husband already have two children, so that the children can live with their father. But Harvard Law School rejected Ruth's request, but some of the school's male students had the opportunity to transfer.
In 1970, Ruth had left Harvard and lived with Martin in New York. She graduated from Columbia University and became a law professor at Rutgers University, but Ruth could not find a job because no law firm wanted to hire her. Just because she's a woman, even though she's better than other male candidates. Therefore, she had to go to teach at Rutgers University. Until one day, Martin showed her a very interesting tax fraud case.
