Filming of the film started on September 17, 1997. The reason why I chose to shoot in Chicago is because the creative staff don't want the buildings in the background of the film to have a fashionable style with shimmering metallic luster, as long as they are cold gray. Moreover, the times, characters and alleys in the film all have a barren and declining appearance. In the words of director Brian Helgeland, it has a rough texture and a special style of black and white film. The time in the film is vague, and the location is uncertain. You won't find buildings after the 1940s, and there are no models of cars after 1989. In order to let the images convey the story, the director of photography Ericson Cole (Ericson Core) deliberately reduced the color saturation to a minimum. At the same time, the film also has dark humor. The character played by Mel Gibson is straightforward and unsmiling, and all entanglements and nothingness happen exactly around him.
In order to remove the color of the city as much as possible, the crew used a lot of brown paint. Before shooting starts every morning, there is a painter ready to erase the red markings on the street.
