This is the early work of director Tony Kotter, but the sharp, full and strong style has taken shape. The protagonist is Kevin Costner and Anthony Quinn. The woman entangled between these two men is Maria played by Madeleine Marie Stowe Mora . Her superb acting portrays a woman who succumbed to the power of the gang and yearns for true love.
"Revenge" tells a story about "a man's love, a woman's love; a man's evil, a woman's sin". Since everyone looks at it with ethical thinking, it feels that this movie is useless. However, there are profound historical and cultural differences between Chinese and Western ethical development concepts. The origin of Western ethical thinking is to "use war to deal with chaos", so the development of ethics rationalizes "predation". Taking off the glasses of ethics and morality, I evaluate this film from four aspects:
First, the film begins with the friendship between two men and the hatred surrounding a woman, and then seeks forgiveness from each other, thus revealing that the relationship between men is both brutal and fair. Cruelty is embodied in the two sides fighting each other to retaliate in order to preserve their personal dignity, and the value of individual survival is at the cost of plundering each other's right to survive; justice is embodied in the moment when both sides are forced to lose their dignity, they arouse men's inner respect and understanding for each other. And this kind of male relationship will be especially remarkable when two big men with high respect in front of everyone, one is a veteran, and the other is the boss of the black society.
Second, by describing the affection of two men for the same woman to express that a man is a contradiction between tenderness and predation. In order to rob and possess their own women, Jack and his friend Tibei did not hesitate to sacrifice the dignity and life of their lovers. Men seem to understand love and are strangling the tender nature of love.
Third, at the end of the play, when the heroine says "I love you" to Jack, she is actually confessing for herself, hoping to reduce her inner guilt by admitting that she is punished for love. Women, especially those hovering between two men who love themselves, are both hateful and pathetic. She seems to have loved her husband Ti Bei, and she seems to love Jack persistently. These two loves from different times are too much and too little for her. If a man experiences love by possessing a woman, then a woman experiences being loved by being possessed by a man. If men are considered to pay for love by competing with each other, then women embody their own value by being contested by men. No matter how ruined by the resentful man, the woman's heart will always be noble until death, because there are still two men fighting each other for her, suffering for a lifetime.
Fourth, the whole movie, at the beginning, the focus is not on Revenge, but on human desires. Human desire destroys oneself and the other side. But at the end of the movie, it is explained from a deeper level that human desire produces hatred, but people review themselves in hatred and obtain spiritual rebirth.
