The script of the film was jointly completed by Lawrence Kasdan and Lucas, and it was not until the filming plan and budget were finalized that the actual writing began. At that time, the art department of the crew had begun to design work based on Lucas's story outline. Lucas, Kasdan, Marqund and producer Howard G. Kazankin spent two weeks discussing the concept of the script, and Kasdan then constructed a formal script based on the recording of the conversation. Because Harrison Ford did not sign up to star in the two sequels, and "Indiana Jones" made his value soar, the film's creator was quite entangled in whether to invite Ford to return to the Star Wars team. Ford suggested that Han Solo end up with self-sacrifice in the new film, but Lucas strongly opposed it. Yoda would not have appeared in the film originally, but Marquand believes that returning to Dagoba is particularly important to solve the predicament of Shanghai Central. On the advice of a child psychologist, Lucas added a scene where Yoda confirmed that Darth Vader was Luke's biological father, because he did not want the child audience to misunderstand Vader.
