The entire planning and production process of "Superman Returns" has more than 10 years, with a total investment of more than 260 million U.S. dollars. In this long and huge production process, the production company replaced 3 famous directors in order to achieve better quality. The first person who received the invitation was Tim Bolton, but it stopped due to the schedule conflict of the ghost director. In 2001, the producer saw McG who was in the top position of "Charlie Girl 2" at the time, but because he couldn't reach Warner on the shooting location.
