"Le feu follet" not only continues Louis Malle's consistent creative concept in spirit, but also inherits his consistent feature of "compressing time" in the handling of the story. Most of the plots take place in one or two days, and the emotional changes of the characters are emphasized. The characters in Mahler's films often have extraordinary qualities and have a romantic tendency. "Le feu follet" has an extremely profound description of the social level, and has consistently mocked and satirized the unacceptable social etiquette of the upper-middle class and intellectuals and the hypocrisy hidden under politeness. The seriousness and sadness that the film exudes, as well as the extremely personal emotions and emotional experience, give the characters a strong tragic color. Based on self-expression as the starting point, the director’s sentimental shooting method vividly portrays the decadent mood and restless state of mind of a fallen prodigal who is addicted to alcohol before committing suicide. The film also depicts a 1963 Ukiyo-e in Paris in a calm style. The documentary glance followed the protagonist Allen on the streets of Paris, filled with the desolation and helplessness of the world. The noise in the background further highlights the anxiety and alienation in Allen's inner world
