The film is adapted from the mystery novel of the same name by Paula Hawkins. The story frame of the novel comes from the author's own life experience. Paula Hawkins was originally an ordinary journalist in London, commuting to work on the subway every day, but the experience of other office workers was accustomed to inspire the author. After the novel was first published in January 2015, it sold more than 3 million copies in five months, breaking the British bestseller record, and was ranked first in the 2015 Amazon bestseller list. A few months before the publication of the novel, the trial book was sent out at the annual crime fiction festival in the UK and received good reviews. DreamWorks decisively signed the film adaptation rights before the story was over.
The story of the original book takes place in London, and the filming location is transferred to the wealthy area of New York. The story of the original book unfolds slowly in the first person, told from the perspectives of three women, Rachel, Anna, and Megan, while the film starts from Rachel’s perspective.
