The Iron Giant evaluation action

"Steel Giant" is an excellent animation work reflecting on the war in the context of the Cold War. In this kind of work, large, expressionless machines like the Iron Giant are generally used as the mount or secret weapon of the evil leader, but in this animation, this character has become more complicated than ever. The film’s accusation of war and the metaphor of nuclear bombs, an uncontrollable weapon of lethality, are very obvious, expressing that the villain in the film is not a steel giant, not the soldiers, nor the minister of defense, but the main thrust of the war itself.
"Steel Giant" is a pure movie, no gorgeous scenes, no dazzling special effects, no perfect ending, no singing and dancing, but it will touch the softest corner of the audience's heart. The theme and interest are far away. Higher than the conventional "animation", it is a masterpiece that will be remembered forever.
"Steel Giant" vividly describes a simple and touching story, it constantly grabs from the depths of the audience's heart, exploring the most innocent side. The film does not have magical animation effects. In fact, its animation production is slightly mediocre from some professional perspectives, and the film also conveys some political messages (such as guns, government, and nuclear weapons). But this film deservedly occupies a very important position in the history of Hollywood animation.

Brad Bird is a director who is too good at creating the beauty of the picture, and he is absolutely outstanding in animated films. The quiet snow scene, the quaint town, the heavy sunset, the anti-pattern use of camera positions, and the elevation panning mirror fully demonstrate the sense of shock and oppression. Inheriting the texture of traditional hand-painted animation, it has produced a completely modern movie, which is the most skilled and perfect combination of trying to add 3D technology to 2D animation at the end of the last century. Regardless of the style of painting, the action scenes like a disaster movie, plus the background of political allegory, it is enough to be regarded as a non-traditional genre in the history of animation and a work of epochal significance. A resolute "I want to be a superman." Then he chooses to die with the nuclear warhead. As a weapon developed, he can also become a hero who protects the city. The final ending is very pleasing in the animated film, avoiding the hero's only sacrifice.

(7.0/10) I finally watched this "masterpiece" in its entirety. The amazing thing is that the work that was not too long ago has become an important source of tribute. What's even more amazing is that the Cold War, the style of painting and the bird guide can appear together in such a classic to cliché story template.

The Iron Giant quotes

  • Kent Mansley: [after his first meeting with the Hughes family] HoGARTH? What an embarrassing name. Might as well call him Zeppo, or something like that. What kind of sick person would name a kid Hogar...

[stops and looks over to Hogarth's smashed B-B gun. It reads part of Hogarth's name: Hog- Hug-]

Kent Mansley: Hog Hug. HOG HUG? HOGARTH HUGHES!

[stops the car he was driving]

  • The Iron Giant: [as a nuclear missile is headed for Rockwell; to himself] I fix.

    Hogarth Hughes: Giant?

The Iron Giant: [kneels down to Hogarth] Hogarth. You stay. I go.

[lifts Hogarth's chin with a finger and waves his other finger at him]

    The Iron Giant: No following.

    Hogarth Hughes: I love you.

[the Giant takes off to intercept the rocket]
