The story takes place in San Francisco in the 1930s and 1940s. Sam Spadeand Archer are a pair of detective partners. Their task is to shuttle between the cities in all kinds of colors. The landlord handles the case. One day they received a deal, and a noblewoman entrusted them to find her missing sister. After they fully understood the relevant information, they discovered that the lady's sister was said to be with a mysterious man named Seth. Originally they thought it was a very simple tracing case, but soon they realized that things were far from being as simple as they thought. There is an amazing network behind the scenes of this case, as well as the intricate circumstances of the case.
Archer was killed in the process of investigating the case, and Frod Sess was also brutally murdered and died. The police soon intervened, but the police's conclusion was surprising. They thought that Spade might have an affair with Archer's wife Ava and killed her partner. For a while, Spade was not able to dig further. The truth of the case is the opposite and it is hard to protect itself. Spade is unwilling to give up. He is still secretly exploring the case. He went to visit the noblewoman and learned that her real name is Bridge. Elmer and others reselled antiques. As they continued to deepen, Gutman approached Spade and asked them to get a priceless treasure-the "Malta Eagle" statue. And this is where Spade is in a very difficult situation, because if he wants to get this statue, there must be someone who has to bear the responsibility for murdering Archer before he can surrender the statue.

Because this one is so good... so the others on Bogart inevitably make me think: Errrrrrr, Not again...

It's basically set and studio shooting. The dialogue is very dense, but the taste of old movies is irresistible. Humphrey Bogart is really tough.

The Maltese Falcon quotes

  • Brigid O'Shaughnessy: What would you do if I didn't tell you? Something wild and unpredictable?

    Spade: I might.

  • Sam Spade: If you kill me, how are you going get the bird? And if I know you can't afford to kill me, how are you going to scare me into giving it to you?

Kasper Gutman: Well, sir, there are other means of persuasion besides killing and threatening to kill.

Sam Spade: Yes, that's... That's true. But, there're none of them any good unless the threat of death is behind them. You see what I mean? If you start something, I'll make it a matter of your having to kill me or call it off.

Kasper Gutman: That's an attitude, sir, that calls for the most delicate judgment on both sides. Because, as you know, sir, in the heat of action men are likely to forget where their best interests lie and let their emotions carry them away.

Sam Spade: Then the trick from my angle is to make my play strong enough to tie you up, but not make you mad enough to bump me off against your better judgment.

Kasper Gutman: By gad, sir, you are a character. There's never any telling what you'll say or do next, except that it's bound to be something astonishing.
