The New World script creation

In the 1970s, director Terrence Malick was moved by the emotions in " Pocahontas " and deliberately made it into a movie. The first draft of the script was completed around 1990. From the perspective of the director, the propositions of tribal disputes and colonial development are huge, not only the narrative is complicated, but also the human nature is deeply explored. Therefore, a lot of evidence was collected when conceiving the script. From writing to forming and shooting, it spanned 25 years. The positioning of the film is not a historical documentary, so it is inevitable to incorporate some joking elements in the shaping of the characters. It has conducted in-depth research on various events that occurred in Jamestown 400 years ago, and then incorporated the director's own insights into the film.

The New World quotes

  • Captain Christopher Newport: All these months at sea. I'm weary of looking further. This place will serve. We have deep water to the shore. We can see up and down the river. Our enemies will have no advantage of surprise. Bring the anchors and the midsails to shore in case some homesick person decides to slip away with them. We must be careful not to offend the Naturals. If our crops fail, we shall be obliged to trade with them. Once we're established here, we may go up the river and seek a route to the other sea.

  • John Smith: [to Pocahontas] Don't trust me. You don't know who I am!
