Fernandois a lonely The Ornithologist and an atheist. He was rescued by two Chinese girls on a pilgrimage after he was accidentally swept away by rapids as he walked along a river in northern Portugal trying to find the endangered black stork. Because the two Chinese girls thought Fernando had no faith, they tied him to a tree. After sneaking away in the middle of the night, he witnessed a group of people performing a bizarre religious ceremony and killing a pig. He then meets a shepherd named Jesusand has sex with him. Afterwards, he had an argument with Jesus, and in the process of arguing, he accidentally killed Jesus. Before long, he is plunged into a dark and eerie jungle, gradually escaping into a series of unimaginable events, where reality is gradually infiltrated by fantasy

There aren't a lot of religious metaphors ("The Cry" is a lot), and the birds are not prominently photographed (animals are well used, see Kusturica). But this film tells about an atheist's drifting, metaphysically playing cleanly and thoroughly like a mountain stream, the audience is full of curiosity, and it is easy to follow the creator's thoughts to understand the meaning it carries.

It started out as "Strange "Birds" by the Lake", and later became "Unfamiliar "Men and Women" by the Lake".
