As the director and screenwriter of the film, Derek Sianfrans incorporated a lot of his own experience and emotions of reading when creating this story. In 2007, before Derek launched "Blue Valentine's Day", he started writing the script of the film. At that time, Derek's wife was pregnant with his second child. Derek is about to be a father again, but he thinks about how he can think about his future life and what he can provide for the child in his wife's belly. And these ideas turned into a legacy left to his children.
When Derek Sianfrans was in film school, he wanted to make a movie like Abel Guns’ "The Glory History of Napoleon." So he created this story and understood the narrative method of the whole movie story. When writing and shooting movies, Derek watched a lot of Jack London's works, and found a lot of inspiration and storytelling angles from them. Among them, "The Call of the Wild" expresses a story about a connection between himself and his ancestors, and the director edited this similar story into "Outside the Pine Forest", and found the film to be suitable for it.
