"Die Welle" through the interpretation of an exercise course, seriously and powerfully attacked the dictatorship teaching system and social atmosphere
. The "Nazi Crash Course" in the film not only shows the audience a miniature Nazi Germany, but also clearly shows how individuals are alienated by the collective. In "Die Welle", the audience can see almost all the typical elements of dictatorship: unprincipled collectivism, annihilation of individuality, uniforms that eliminate differences, isolation of dissidents, abolition of freedom of speech, etc..
The colorful in "Die Welle" corresponds to democracy, and the monochrome corresponds to dictatorship; the film expresses abstract and rational political concepts through this image of color language, and truly conveys the emotional attitude towards political discourse. The contrast between the colorful colors in the film and the monochromatic colors of white, red, and black creates a tendency to reflect on the relationship between democracy and dictatorship. However, the closed ending of the film can easily lead to a simple distinction between good democracy and bad dictatorship, which affects the audience's deep reflection on the relationship between democracy and dictatorship. The death ending of the film shows the bloody and fiasco of the dictatorship, but it is too simplistic to conclude the death penalty of the dictatorship in this way.
After "Die Welle" was released, it caused a strong response from film critics and many scholars. The film is an experiment and a funeral song of totalitarianism. The film ends with a very dramatic tragedy, and the director's deep thinking and deep criticism are injected into the farce. The film provides the audience with a vivid picture of totalitarianism, and at the same time it depicts the "rabbit crowd" in the real world
