The mother of teenager Nigel Slater ( Alfred Thomas Highmore ) was never a good cook, and she could not even make simple soups. Toast is the most commonly eaten for a family of three. When the mother died from an asthma attack, the father could only replace it with canned food. Later, Mrs. Potter ( Helena Bonham Carter ), a cooking cleaner, grabbed his father's stomach and became his stepmother. The growing hostility made Nigel choose to participate in a housekeeping class, learn to make various desserts, to challenge this superb stepmother. Father had to endure the constant quarrel between the two people every day, and was forced to eat the endless desserts that the two people made one after another. The war between the two finally stopped after the sudden death of his father. The 17-year-old Nigel packed his bags, found a job in the kitchen, and logged into the glorious hall of extraordinary cooking.

The director’s principle of subtraction directly turned this biographical film of Electra, Oedipus, homosexual, and sissy into a little fresh. Food, children, and the age of that era are quite good. Unfortunately, as soon as Helena Bonham Carter appeared, the director was completely out of control. All the previous narrative clues are broken, food fighting, mother and son fighting for father's love, and running away from home are all broken, but fortunately, there are neurotic heartthrob jokes who bake lemon pie for you. ★★★☆
