Wonderstruck positive review

"Wonderstruck" was shortlisted for this year's main competition in Cannes, mainly because the director's video narrative skills are smooth and sophisticated, and the standard is quite high. You know, sometimes you can't just rely on the protagonist's crying and sensational lines, but the important components of the film language such as the camera and the soundtrack are equally important.
In the movie, the two protagonists are deaf children. When talking about the feeling of becoming deaf, the protagonist Xiao Zhengtai said: It just feels very quiet. At this time, the director cleverly did the opposite. He used a lot of soundtracks in the film. There was a soundtrack for almost 95% of the film's duration. The high-decibel volume and the repeated changes of the melody formed a strong contrast with the smoothness of the lens. A subtle sense of isolation is formed between the protagonist in the lens and the noisy outside world, and a very inconclusive feeling of deafness is vividly presented by the director. Costumes, makeup, and props have always been Hines' strengths. Hines seems to be particularly good at restoring the sense of age, whether it is the flashy New York theater in 1927 or the streets of New York where hippies prevailed in 1977, in the movie. When they appear, they all seem so real and sensible, without pretentiousness. At the same time, the film's use of clay animation is a magical touch   .

Boys look for their fathers, girls look for their mothers, because the (deaf and) museums are connected to New York across time and space. Where is the wonder-struck is simply fetich-struck plus cliche-struck, not to mention the abused Space Oddity. If Carol is actually selling overflowing retro feelings, I have never thought that this time I can even bother to sell the film. (But it seems to see the wax mosquito in Daddy Longlegs.

The intersection of the 20s and 70s passages is the drama forced by two weak narrative lines in the unconvincing coincidence. Hines is good at directing and visually presenting the subtle and delicate character tension in such an awkward story. There is no room for play, and the efforts of the art department do not give the black and white passages that lack the style of silent film performances the nostalgia they deserve. Rather than telling a story, the film is more like a mediocre love letter to New York.
