Synopsis

The British intelligence agency "Circular Field" is led by "Boss" (John Hurt) and has five senior agents under the code names "The Tinker", "The Tailor", "The Soldier", "The Poor" and "beggar".

"Boss" received news that the hostile Soviet spy organization had placed a spy code-named "Mole" in the "Circular Field", specially responsible for stealing high-level intelligence.

And this "mole" is one of the five senior agents.

On this day, "Boss" dispatched a highly loyal agent Jim (Mark Strong) to Hungary, because there is accurate information on the identity of "Mole".

Unexpectedly, Jim encountered an ambush in Hungary, was shot and arrested, and the mission failed.

The executives were furious, and the "boss" was forced to resign. At the same time, the "beggar" (Gary Oldman), who was trusted by the "boss", also left, and the "rounder" was taken over by the "tinker".

But if the moles are not removed, how can people be relieved?

Soon after the "boss" died of illness, British Deputy Cabinet Minister Lacan judged that the "beggar" who resigned with him must not be a mole.

So he personally invited the "beggar" to come out and let him find spies in the dark.

After the "beggar" came out, he first investigated the retirement list. He judged that there must be a reason for these people being "cleaned up" after the "boss" left.

One of them, Connie, caught his attention. Her original job was to examine the identities of outsiders. Why did she suddenly retire?

After the "beggar" finds Connie, she learns that she has found a suspicious cultural counselor named Polyakov.

But just after she reported the matter to the "tinker", she was considered not doing her job properly and was forced to retire.

The "beggar" judged that this Polyakov might have something to do with the mole.

At the same time, he also discovered that the "Circular Field" had a disbursement of secret funds.

The destination was a man named Ellis, and the "beggar" who was very familiar with this name knew that Ellis was a pseudonym for Jim.

That is to say, Jim not only did not die, but also secretly returned to the country and hid somewhere.

Maybe finding Jim is the key to solving this puzzle...

Video Analysis

A slow-paced spy film, and even made a style similar to a literary film. The most commendable thing about the film is its gorgeous cast: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, John Hurt, Toby Jones, Mark Strong, Benedict T Cumberbatch, a group of well-known names, two of them are Oscar winners, and several have been nominated. Their superb acting skills make the already touching film even more moving.

This is a movie based on the novel of the same name. I believe that friends who have not read the novel are the same as me when watching this movie. They have always been affected by the intricate relationship between the characters and the tongue-in-cheek names, and they cannot understand the plot well. Fortunately, we are almost familiar with the actors in it. As long as the names and faces are matched, the story is not difficult to understand.

The content of the story in the film is actually not very complicated, but spy films are often mixed with some plots that compete with each other, and occasional interludes make the story look confusing. Let’s take a brief look. The film presents us with the contest between the two major spy organizations, the “Circular Field” led by the boss played by John Hurt in the United Kingdom and the “Moscow Center” led by Karla in the Soviet Union. .

The core of the story is that Kara set up a double agent in the "Circle", and after the boss died of illness, the "Beggar" played by Gary Oldman was responsible for finding him. There is an interlude running through the beginning and end of the film, that is, a group of agents of "Circular Field" are having a dinner, and the reason why it is divided into several sections and inserted in the plot is because this section of the dinner hides the truth of the story.

Several of the details are very good. At 35 minutes and 24 seconds of the film, the boss is jokingly accusing the "tinker" of messing around with the recipes. This actually implies the ambition of the "tinker". At 36 minutes and 10 seconds, when the "beggar" was looking at his wife, the "tailor" behind him was also looking in this direction. It was obvious that he was seducing the "beggar"'s wife.

At 1 hour and 19 minutes, the "beggar" saw his wife and the "tailor" messing around, so open and aboveboard, which faintly implied that this matter was intended for the "beggar" to see. Including the 1 hour and 58 minutes at the end, Jim and the "tailor" look at each other, here we are told that their relationship is unusual, and it also explains why the previous news leaked.

Of course, a spy war movie is indispensable for some exciting plots. There are few such plots in the film. What is impressive is the section in which Peter played by Cuan Fu steals the register, which is very exciting. However, compared to some spy-war action films that fight at every turn, this movie is quieter and more worthy of savouring. The radish and vegetables have their own love. I believe this literary spy-war film will also find its fans.

Some movies can bring you a hearty pleasure, and some movies can only be tasted by chewing slowly .

The higher the expectations, the greater the disappointment! The director respects the original work very much, but unfortunately the screenwriter didn’t take the original work seriously. The first half of the movie has a large booth, and there is a lack of necessary hints and connections between the important characters, and there is almost no substantial relationship with the whole story. Not to mention the failure of this script. This may be the spy movie closest to the life of a real spy. There is no gunfight or car chase, but only a group of tired, attractive old men. ★★★

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy quotes

  • Oliver Lacon: The treasurer can't understand why can't the intelligence service simply put in a request for a general increase in funding and then you'll account for the spend on your special operation?

Percy Alleline: Operation 'Witchcraft' needs to remain a secret; it's a fiefdom of its own.

Oliver Lacon: Yes, that's what's winding us; whole thing's very unaccountable isn't it? This London house that no one knows the address of, is that really necessary?

Percy Alleline: Now more than ever, we need to protect our Soviet source.

Roy Bland: [lights a cigarette] So where do you propose we meet, in a café?

Oliver Lacon: The rent and rates on this house have... doubled.

Roy Bland: We spent millions on nuclear warheads, we're asking for a few thousand for a house. I wonder if Karla has the same problem with the treasury at the Kremlin.

Oliver Lacon: Look, nobody underestimates the importance of the jobs you chaps are doing. What happened in Budapest last year... That was a disaster.

Roy Bland: With respect, sir, that wasn't one of your civil servants that got killed, was it? Now this isn't about soldiers in trenches anymore. We're the front line now...

    Oliver Lacon: Roy...

Roy Bland: For 25 years we've been the only ones standing between them and Karla and Moscow and the Third bloody World War!

Oliver Lacon: Look, the minister is very pleased with your progress so far. He's less pleased though, with our progress with our American cousins. You see, in their eyes... You're still a leaky ship.

  • Control: Trust no one, Jim. Especially not in the mainstream. Sit down. I understand you still have one Hungarian identity running.

    Jim Prideaux: I do.

Control: I want you to go to Budapest. This is not above board. Nobody else knows. They're after my head, Jim-boy. You understand? I have had an offer of service. A Hungarian general wants to come over. I would like you to meet him. He has some information that I need, Jim.

    Jim Prideaux: What information?

Control: Treasure. He has the name of the mole the Russians have planted in the British intelligence service, right at the top of the Circus. There's a rotten apple, Jim. We have to find it.
