Enemy Review

I watched another masterpiece today, Enemy, and I was so satisfied.
The first thing the movie catches your eye is the color of the picture-yellow, and it is dull, rendering the extremely depressing and gloomy atmosphere. The lens is often shot from a bird's-eye view or from a window into the room. The prominent individuals are in the city's tiny and insecurity. Those two things set the emotional tone for the movie.
The beginning of the film takes place in a dark room, with a group of men gathered to watch naked prostitutes masturbating, and the symbol throughout the film appears - the spider, the stripper lifts her feet in high heels to the spider. Step down... The next thing is the normal narrative: Adam, a college history teacher with a sloppy life, lives the same life every day. During the conversation with his colleague, the colleague talked about the movie, so in order to add some color to life , He rented a more joyful movie recommended by a colleague at the DVD store. On the night after watching it, he dreamed and realized the plot of the movie. He felt strange. After confirmation, it was exactly the same as the dream. More importantly, he found The hotel waiter was actually himself. After some investigation it was discovered that the man was a third-rate actor, Anthony, who looked exactly like himself. After meeting, the two were extremely surprised and could not accept the reality. At this moment, the contradiction between them was getting bigger and bigger, and the truth was getting closer...
The first reaction after watching the movie was: Another WHAT THE FUCK movie, Completely do not understand! The infinite open ending can be described as nonsensical, but this one has a curiosity that hooks me tightly. After sitting and thinking about it for half an hour, I finally came up with a clue:
In fact, Adam and Anthony are the same person, and the spider symbolizes sex and desire. The most difficult thing about the film is more than that, the director also played a sinister trick - the two characters have two different elements - the character and the woman. The director intertwined the roles of the two with women, making the film extremely complicated but still within the cleanup. The real man is a history teacher but his woman is the actor's wife. Becoming an actor is his imagination. The protagonist had a dream of becoming an actor since he was a child, but after marrying a wife and having children, his desire was curbed, just like stepping on a spider with high heels. There is a huge difference between the longing id and the super responsible ego, so he imagines himself as an actor and has an affair. In the movie, anthony accused Adam of having sex with his wife on the grounds that Adam called his house to talk to his wife, so anthony persuaded Adam to change his identity and have a "play" with Adam's girlfriend alone in order to balance it out. He died in a car accident with an affair (representing his return to his senses and no longer fantasizing), when he found a new key to the secret room again, his desire came back again - the last scene The wife turned into a giant spider stuffed the room. This cycle is about to start all over again, as said at the beginning of the film - chaos is actually conditioning that has not yet been deciphered. All this chaos is driven by the desire of the protagonist.

Enemy quotes

  • Anthony: How many months are you?

    Helen: Six months.

Anthony: That's nice. I should be going. I have a class I have to teach.

[He laughs while she looks freaked]

Anthony: You never know how your day is gonna turn out. Have a nice day.

  • Anthony: Control, it's all about control. Every dictatorship has one obsession and that's it. In ancient Rome they gave the people bread and circuses. They kept population busy with entertainment but other dictatorships used other strategies to control ideas, the knowledge... how do they do that? Lower education, they limit culture, censor information, they censor any means of individual expression and is important to remember this, that this is a pattern, that repeats itself through out history.
