YSS STRONGLY RECOMMEND

remembers dreaming of being a movie director when he was in junior high school. He also wrote a short novel in which a melancholic protagonist became so obsessed with movies that he eventually became a directorial geek. The reason why I set the melancholy character of the characters is that at that time, I myself was this virtuous character. I was inexplicably depressed every day, and my mood was so dark that I wanted to commit suicide, but I didn't know the reason. It's been a long time since I left that stage. When I watched this film, I remembered the feeling at that time, like the next day. Melancholy is probably part of human nature.

Justin's greatest pain lies in what she said: The earth is evil. She said to her sister sadly and quietly that all creatures on earth are evil. This sentence is simple, but shocking. The melancholy Justin is a pretense, Lars von Trier's self-voice, and that's the central theme that the whole film is trying to talk about. So if 2012 really comes, if comets really hit the earth, if nuclear weapons completely destroy the world... we deserve it. Because we are inherently evil, we should be damned. Humans should die, and everything on earth should die. Human sin, derived from original sin? Human ugliness is all about greed and fear. But all kinds of life, insects, animals, plants... are not all just low-level manifestations of human beings? The law of survival on earth is the law of the jungle. If you are not selfish, you will perish. People who don't do it for themselves will be punished by heaven and earth. According to this logic, the end of the world is the punishment that the Lord of the universe should give us. It's just that we are the result of the creation of the universe, and we can't get rid of the limitations that come from ourselves. According to the "Tiaoouhua Prophecy", the earth belongs to the lowest level in the universe - the ninth level planet, and it is the space domain with the lowest level of mental development of the whole organism. Our lives are based more on instinct than spirituality. It's just that we are short-sighted and self-righteous.

Melancholia is executed in a way that makes Lars von Trier at his best. The surreal vision conveys deep sadness in the emptiness and the supernatural. Without the eerie and gloomy "Antichrist", without the silent and icy coldness of "Breaking the Waves", "Melancholia" is like a Renaissance oil painting, with the violin and the piano moving towards the ultimate end of crushing beauty.

The end of the world is not scary, what is scary is a world without love, and capricious love. Evil is our destiny, and love is our comfort.

Melancholia quotes

  • Jack: Too bad about Tim.

    Justine: What about Tim?

Jack: That he got fired. he didn't last many hours in the business, but then again, it's a rather unpredictable one. You're a king one day and beggar the next.

    [to Tim]

Jack: So, you go right back to wherever you came from, right, buddy?

  • Justine: I was just thinking - what if instead we try and sell you to the public, Jack? Well then, surprisingly, I'd arrive right back where I started from - at nothing.

Tim: "Nothing." It's not such a bad tagline, Jack.

Jack: Would my newly pledged A.D. please expand a little on her thoughts of the tagline?

Justine: Nothing is too much for you, Jack. I hate you and your firm so deeply I couldn't find the words to describe it. You are a despicable power-hungry little man, Jack.

Jack: Is that a resignation? Because they aren't too many jobs out there, I tell you.
