Shocked, but not afraid.

After hearing people mention "Rashomon" many times, I finally watched the movie on March 15, and I bought the book before and didn't have time to watch it. The reason why I suddenly watched this movie is because I saw a friend say: Which do you think is the best movie in history? In the related voting activities of "toptens", a large voting website in the United States, "The Godfather" topped the list, followed by "Forrest Gump". Of course I am also involved. I voted for this movie: Rashomon, currently ranked 318th. In my heart, it will always be No.1. When I saw him say this, I felt that there was no reason to delay.

When I watched the movie, I thought that many people would not like this movie, because it was too ugly to face people's hearts. That is the truth that people are trying to hide. Too many people don't want to face their inner falsehood and ugliness. Many times people hate a person because they see their ugly true face in that person. So people are used to being complimented. Even if it is obviously false, they are happy to listen to them, but they are very disgusted with those who tell the truth. They think that they are uneducated and have no emotional intelligence.

People always beautify themselves instinctively, so they lie, sometimes consciously and sometimes unconsciously. Just like writing autobiographies, posting microblogs, and interacting with people, people generally choose to express themselves selectively, choose the side they think is good, and hope that others think they are that kind of person. Not everyone can express it authentically, but in fact, the true self cannot be concealed. Whether it is beautiful or ugly, no matter how well it is concealed, it can be seen through one's own words and deeds. Even sometimes, through a picture and an expression sent by a person, the real interest is exposed all at once.

Watching this movie made me very emotional, thinking that I have been interacting with people all the time, and I am very active in helping others to understand me, knowing my characteristics and hobbies, and it is easy to communicate and come up with some ideas. Showing who I am, even showing what I think is bad is better than good, like I used to say that it's easier for me to accept pain than happiness. At the beginning, I showed the most difficult side of myself to identify with, and let others make judgments and choices as soon as possible, and I didn’t want to be disappointed when I found out that I was such an unreasonable person in the subsequent communication process. Of course, I will also show the good aspects of myself, but the advantages I think others may not think so, and the unreasonable things that others think are the shortcomings may be the qualities that I am very proud of. Communication is a two-way choice. Letting others choose it also saves me a lot of trouble. I don’t have to bother to distance and refuse. Therefore, it is also very selfish for me to show my “bad” side.

The darkness of human nature is often surprising, especially when there is a big stake in it. At the juncture of life and death, human nature is exposed. Only then will we have a special understanding and experience of the saying that adversity sees the truth. It doesn't need to be such a serious situation, and it can be seen even in the usual small things. For example, when a person encounters unfortunate and unfortunate things, many people express concern and make suggestions, but when they get out of trouble, many people are very disappointed, and even turn jealous if the situation is better than themselves. Every time I see this subtlety in human nature, I can't help but laugh. Therefore, I never abuse sympathy nor easily accept others' sympathy and so-called concern. I am only grateful for genuine concern, and I also express my concern with actual behaviors to those who are truly affectionate.

Someone in the play said: If people don't trust each other, what's the difference between this world and hell? Another said: The world is hell. Another said: I have even heard of ghosts living here in Rashomon who ran away for fear of the ferocity of humans. This dialogue is so naked and wonderful, it is no wonder that it will scare many people and think this movie is boring. I am also shocked by human ugliness and lies, but not afraid because I have nothing like that in my heart to avoid or confront.

A sentence in the play that left a deep impression on me is that human life is as beautiful as a girl, and as short as the morning dew. I forgot who said it under what circumstances. In short, it makes people feel that life is so beautiful, fragile and sad. Even so, you can't lie to survive, or harm others in order to save yourself. In that case, even if life is long because of it, it loses its beauty, as ugly as lies and deceit, and it is not worth mentioning.

The woman in the play, while pathetic and a victim, isn't cute either. She yearns for a better life, and hopes to be loved by a man who has the strength to protect her and go through fire and water for him. She said that women love men who are full of enthusiasm. In fact, women care more about feelings than men. Women can work hard for love, but men often lose the courage to be deserters in the face of reality. I think maybe women always think that they will be protected by men, so they have no turning back, while men are afraid of taking responsibility and shrink back. But women also show the dark side of human nature when they are disappointed. That kind of pain and distortion, in addition to the tragedy caused by the times, is also the weakness of human nature itself. The former makes people feel sad and heartbroken, and the latter makes people feel unworthy of sympathy and indifference.

Seeing someone say that the movie can't be watched because the actress is too ugly makes people laugh again. Of course, she is not enough to be beautiful, but there are many scenes that are still very moving. In addition, she expresses the hysterical pain and despair so vividly that she feels like she is about to collapse. In fact, she has collapsed. She seems to be using her own despair and darkness to flog the ugliness of this world, flogging the cowardly and ugly men in this world.

In addition, the shooting is really wonderful. For example, the scene where Tajomaru sees the wife of the samurai, the combination of light and shadow, the wind lifts the veil, and the vision moves from bottom to top. The shooting is so perfect. Although it is black and white, the flow of light and shadow makes people feel the beauty of dazzling colors, and also endows actors who are not beautiful women with stunning beauty that causes others to commit crimes involuntarily. That kind of splendor is a classic that can't be surpassed by the sound and light feasts produced by the blockbusters using high technology.

There is also Toshiro Mifune's acting skills are really good, the performance is very vivid, and he is very handsome, and even looks a little European and American. I plan to start watching Akira Kurosawa's movies when I have time in the future. It seems that I also bought his autobiography "The Oil of the Toad", but I haven't read it because I don't like the title. After watching the movie, I found "Rashomon" written by a friend to read, and what he said in the text, I also deeply thought it was true. He said:

When writing "Rashomon", Akira Kurosawa did not let the fluent penman continue to run, and he chose to stop abruptly. He said: Unexpectedly, "Rashomon" became the gate that made me, a filmmaker, go to the world, but I, who wrote my autobiography, could not pass through this gate and move forward.

The people who slammed "Rashomon" at the beginning suddenly rushed to the camera to praise it, and blatantly lied and fabricated their own credit. "This is the real Rashomon." Akira Kurosawa sighed.

There is no better illustration of an author than the author's work.
Kurosawa ends his autobiography with this sentence. I agree 100%, and that's what I've been emphasizing.

Rewatch. If there is no trust between people, what is the difference between this world and hell. Akira Kurosawa's first truly master work. Will watch again.

I have to say that this film can be regarded as a classic indeed worthy of its name, with clever narrative techniques and profound core connotations, which has indeed brought a lot of inspiration to many filmmakers. Where there is weakness, there will be lies, and you must not destroy your humanity for your own selfishness...

Rashomon quotes

  • Commoner: It sounded interesting, at least while I kept out of the rain. But if it's a sermon, I'd sooner listen to the rain.

  • Priest: A human life is truly as frail and fleeting as the morning dew.
