Plot Introduction: Aileen (Charlize Theron) was deserted by her mother when she was very young, and she was always abused and unloved in her childhood. In order to maintain her life, she reluctantly immersed herself in the dangerous world of highway prostitution until she met Selby (Christina Ricci), a naïve girl who was Aileen's last chance at a normal life. But ultimately all Aileen understood was violence.

This film is a restricted film full of dirty words and a little sex but is worth to watch. This is one of the greatest performances in the history of cinema which is based on a true story. The main actress Charlize Theron has nominated as “Best Actress” in Oscar.

I remember my favorite writer Anne Baby has said that none of the films could be completely understood by their audience and what audience gets from the film only was the part they themselves needed. I seldom watch films not on account of disliking them, just because I can't acquire what I want from most of films. But “Monster” is different which touched me fiercely and let me think a lot not only about the society but also the humanity. I knew this film from my friend. After her telling me the story, I told myself that I must watch it. And during the process, I kept crying nearly from climax to the end of the film.

Modern people, now, become more and more indifferent. This film obviously reflects modern people's weakness---arrogance, stoniness and egoism. In the film, Aileen is an anti-hero. In this unfair reality, her destiny is doomed as a tragic ending. The main fault doesn't belong to her, but the gloomy society and those evil people who have little mercy on others.

After Aileen meeting Selby who lived in a rich and comfortable family, she wanted to live a normal peaceful life with her. In order to give Selby a happy life, she began to find a suitable job. But nobody wanted to hire her because she used to be a hooker with bad reputation. At last, she came back to prostitution. Unfortunately, she became mental disorder after long-time abuse during sex services. She hated to be a hooker but she has no power to change, ultimately she stepped up to crime, killing these whoremasters and robbed them. It is a true tragedy happened in America. They don't only give a hand to those poor people and even pushed them into inescapable abyss. These people often put humanism, morality and mercy on their tips of mouths, but what they really do is crueler than the most horrible devil. If someone can offer a normal job to Aileen, she couldn't fall victim to it. Their discrimination to a pity girl wholly spoiled her life. When policemen suspected Aileen, she sent Selby away lest affecting on her. But Selby, unimaginable, accused Aileen in court. Aileen hated all people in the world but Selby, what she did was to show her love and care to her. On the contrary, Selby is thankless to her and sue Aileen, while until the end of Aileen's lifetime, she told herself, "It's my fault. Sorry, Selby , I can't give you a happy life. But love you!"Selby is thankless to her and sue Aileen, while until the end of Aileen's lifetime, she told herself, "It's my fault. Sorry, Selby, I can't give you a happy life. But love you!"Selby is thankless to her and sue Aileen, while until the end of Aileen's lifetime, she told herself, "It's my fault. Sorry, Selby, I can't give you a happy life. But love you!"

Aileen was hung up. Who is unforgivable sinner? Is Aileen, Selby or the society? In this society, everybody is isolated person without love. They only consider of themselves in spite of others' torment. I hope people watching this film will get the deep meaning of it. Our world needs love and allowance to those honest people. Why can't we accept those people who want to change themselves to a helpful person? We really need salvation, but where is our God?

Monster quotes

  • Aileen: Everybody just thinks I'm this bad shitty fucking person, and all I'm fucking tryin' to do is survive, you know?

Thomas: I know. I know what you do for a living. It doesn't bother me. I know you didn't dial it up on a goddamn telephone. That's where you landed. That's what you had to do. What you're feeling right now is just guilt, over something you had absolutely no control over. You know how many of us came back from the war? And almost killed ourselves because we felt exactly the same thing you do, right now.

    Aileen: Yeah?

Thomas: Yeah. And they'll never get it. They'll never get it now, they never got it then, and they sure as hell won't get fucking circumstance!

Aileen: Fuck, man, circumstance, that's exactly it, that's exactly it. You know I feel like I never even had a fucking choice.

Thomas: You never did. But you gotta live. You gotta live.

  • Aileen: [points to the bartender] You owe me change!

    [pause]

Aileen: Fuck it. I'm outta here!

    Selby: Oh, are you sure-

    [touches Lee's shoulder]

Aileen: [rises from chair and pushes Selby off] GET YOUR FUCKIN' HANDS OFF ME, YOU DUMB DYKE! I'm not gonna fuck you for a fucking beer, alright? So, stop wasting your fuckin' time!
