To punk or to wave? -- Comment on "The Wave"

Germans have never lacked introspection.

When Tim finally shoots and ends his young life and falls on the stage, maybe everyone will blame the teacher, the one who led this young life astray. And when the teacher was pulled into the police car, the film gave him a big close-up of his face. We clearly saw the innocence and confusion on his face. Maybe he didn't even figure out what he did wrong.

As a teacher, he did everything he was supposed to do. In order to make his class vivid and profound, he carefully planned a teaching experiment. Students have come alive because of his classes, and the principal has shown his support. He was respected and envied among his teachers. In any case, he was successful as a teacher.

However, without any motive, what triggered the tragedy. The punk music that runs through the film seems to give a clue. Under the impact of modernization, young people have lost their beliefs and pursuits, and they cannot refuse their mediocrity, because this is an era that creates mediocrity. Like the water polo boy in the film said, maybe after high school, go to college, get a job in town, get married, and have a few kids. It seems that the goals that life has given them are too low and too low. They have almost everything, but their hearts are empty. Lack of love and care from relatives, even in school, there are all kinds of competitive pressures. In such a growing environment, many young people choose to escape and withdraw, because no one has given them how to be strong. They numb themselves to manic music, a hallucination that can be amplified by marijuana. But when all the hallucinations woke up, they were still faced with a useless dilemma.

The wave movement of male teachers seems to provide them with a possibility of belief. Make each of them realize their own value. The so-called value is built on the basis of collective strength. The Nazis marked this collective power as a dictatorship like a symbol. But in fact, this kind of collective awakening frenzy has been staged in many corners of the world. It is not surprising that the prototype of the story takes place in the most modernized United States.

The film hopes to use a condensed and extreme example to remind people that if we cannot solve the contradiction between excessive modernization and the lack of human belief, the so-called dictatorship will not repeat itself all the time. The ultimate destruction of human beings is human civilization itself.

Back to Tim's tragedy. He is a typical example of a young soul twisted by modernity. His existence was so unacceptable to society that he had to do something out of the ordinary to prove his existence. The emergence of the wave gave him an opportunity to be accepted by a collective. When he burns down the brand-name clothes that have been marked with extreme industrialization, he obtains unprecedented relief; when he wears the uniform of the wave to perform extreme actions for the "organization", he obtains unprecedented self-satisfaction ; And when the "brothers" of the same "organization" fought for him, his collective sense of identity became more and more inflated. Therefore, it is not difficult to see that it is still the highly modernized capitalist society itself who really harmed him. The marginal group he represents has no right to speak, and as a corner forgotten by society, it may become the fuse of violence at all times.

Aside from heavy realistic thinking, the film itself shows the director's excellent control. The director's grasp of the rhythm and the judgment of the audience's psychology have all made great efforts. Although this may not be regarded as a master's work, the creator's meticulous crafting of the film is very admirable.
