I've been wondering how romantic French people would express personal heroism like "Saving the Privates" or tear-jerking sensation like "The Flag of Tai Chi" if they were asked to reminisce about the brutal war. Of course it's not, but they all seem to be this sprawling movie. It's such a unique French narrative that I try to describe in the same style as the movie: a woman with a "Amelie" face tells a story about him in "The Lighthouse Lover" in a "Deadly Magic"-like subtlety. The complex story of "The English Patient" on the battlefield of Verdun's meat grinder
PS: Don't believe your first impression of the name and poster of this film!
PPS: It is said that reading the original book is also very subtle if you can read French (I will just read Chinese)
