outside of reason

The film review I wrote two years ago is indeed too much and lacking in words. It has been changed for a long time, and there is still a lot of dissatisfaction, but I think that period was really important to me. Depression made me change from a rationalist to a simple one. existentialist. Reason is not the answer, but life may not need an answer either.

Even at 93 years old, Sherlock Holmes is still Holmes. Just like 30 years ago, it can still look at every detail of your body with that iconic gaze the moment you enter the door. But even Sherlock Holmes will grow old one day, and in just a few short years, his memory has been eroded and incomplete by time. The amnesia itself is nothing, but the most painful thing for Holmes is that he knows he is still Holmes, but he does not know why he is what he is today. He was full of guilt and anxiety, but he didn't know where it came from. We may live with this, but he cannot, because he is Sherlock Holmes, and he lives for the truth. At least, he thought so.

He has always been like this, born only for the truth. As Roger asked Sherlock Holmes: When bees die, do you mourn them? Sherlock Holmes replied: "I value the cause of death more than death." He also dismissed Watson's "creation", saying: "Fiction is not worth mentioning at all." The truth is his friend, his Extraordinary reason is the place where his soul can inhabit. And no one can really get close to Sherlock Holmes, not even Watson, because he can't follow Sherlock Holmes' logic. At a certain stop, he waits for Sherlock Holmes, but no one can accompany Sherlock Holmes through the whole process.

But what if Holmes made mistakes too? Reason itself may be trustworthy, but what if the answer lies outside it? For Sherlock Holmes, Ann was not a problem worth mentioning. His logic is completely correct, and he can't find fault in every decision he makes. The answer is a disaster. Yes, the truth had not abandoned him, but Holmes suddenly realized that the truth was no longer his friend. It also just exists there impartially. Suddenly, Holmes realized that he was indeed alone, and what he believed in began to shake. If Ann was a mistake, she was by no means the only one. The truth disappeared in the fog, and loneliness and guilt followed, forcing him to escape from everything in front of him and go into self-exile.

If the world does not need an answer, then there is no need for "Sherlock Holmes" to exist. Who says Sherlock Holmes has to be sharp and conceited? He just lived like a farmer. Until one day, time forced him to re-examine everything 30 years ago.

In a sense, amnesia is also a relief. If time had not eroded the memory, Holmes would not have touched that page again, because it was too painful. And only after experiencing such a memory loss and removing all the regrets in his memory, can he re-examine all this with his undistorted eyes.

Holmes was lucky to have Roger by his side during his toughest years. Sherlock Holmes re-examines his own rationality, and at the same time explores his own buried sensibility with Roger. He is calm, but never cold, he just doesn't want to face his feelings, and he can't experience reliable existence in his feelings. When Roger mocked his mother. Sherlock Holmes said solemnly to Roger: "Apologize immediately, or you will regret it." Roger asked back, do you regret it? Mr. Holmes replied: So much! He cared about Roger, cared about the people around him, and he regretted it, although he never brought it up. He knew he had made a mistake, but had to seal it up. He couldn't face that "soft self", he started to get lost, and suddenly he didn't seem to be familiar with himself.

Memory is like a looping snake, starting with itself and returning to itself at the end. When all memories are reconnected, no matter Ann, no matter John, no matter umezaki, their answer is in Sherlock Holmes himself. All of this came back to the warm Sherlock Holmes that he had been unable to face for decades. He left London and alienated John, not because he was withdrawn, but only to stop hurting his only friend. He finally discovered that the "Sherlock Holmes" was also the truth he was looking for, but the truth of life.

This is a memory, but also a rebirth. He wrote stories to umezaki, he paid tribute to the dead in the sun, and he finally raised his head and said to roger with a smile:

"A person cannot leave this world with regrets."

7/10. I don't know if it's because the makeup artist is incompetent or what, but Xia Fu's face has not changed with the aging 35 years ago. Foreign adaptations of celebrity biographies often like to de-sage, and do not agree with his perfect crime-solving and symbolic attire in the film, the remorse brought by combing the past and the mediocrity of the second half of his life, the gentle man who procrastinates by palm reading, and the man who stops the housekeeper's wife from killing bees. Crash Pain has completely faded away from the arrogant spy image, but the slow pace and constant interjection are very boring.

Mr. Holmes quotes

  • [first lines]

Sherlock Holmes: You shouldn't do that. Tap the glass.

Boy: How did you know I was going to?

Boy's Mother: You must forgive my son, he loves bees.

Sherlock Holmes: It isn't a bee, it's a wasp. Different thing entirely.

  • [last lines]

Roger: [explaining to his mother the same way Mr. Holmes explained to him] The queen runs the colony. Drones service the queen. The workers do the work.

    Mrs. Munro: Isn't it true...
