Vertigo Shots

There is a classic lens in Vertigo, where the hero with acrophobia looks down on the stairs, which produces a kind of dizziness. At first I thought it was a model made by Hitchcock, and the model can be retracted. Understand that the stair model will not change at all, this is just the deformation of the lens telephoto and wide-angle.

The telephoto shot compresses the space, that is, the distance between the close and long shots taken is closer than the actual situation, while the wide angle is the opposite, which has the effect of increasing the space, and the distance between the close and long shots taken is farther than the actual situation.

Vertigo Shots just used this method. The zoom lens was changed from telephoto to wide-angle, and the body was pushed forward, thus basically keeping the shooting range unchanged, but the spatial effect of shooting has changed. Of course, it can also be changed from wide-angle to telephoto, while the body is pulled back to compress the space.

may have been created by Hitchcock. I saw a collection on youtube, except for Vertigo and some of his imitators.

  • [to Scottie]

Gavin Elster: There's no way for them to understand. You and I know who killed Madeleine.

  • Madeleine: There is something I must do, there is something I must do.

Scottie: There is nothing you must do. There is nothing you must do.
