In 2021, throughout the Qingming holiday, I was immersed in the movie "Bright Star", unable to extricate myself.

At the age of forty and not confused, I was emotionally trapped in a movie, and I also felt that I was ridiculous and naive. John Keats was that bright star, a bright shooting star to be precise. This British romantic poet died at the age of 25. I left gently, just as I came gently, I waved my hand gently, saying goodbye to the clouds in the western sky.

It's a 2009 movie, and it's been 12 years now. Abby Cornish was 27 at the time, and Ben Whishaw was 29 at the time, both in their prime. The eyes of the two people, one is charming, the other is deep, love happened in the moment when the eyes met, both of them fell into it, and I, the bystander, also fell into it foolishly. The film carries a touch of Keats' biography, and his love for Fanny Braun during his short and gleaming life undoubtedly inspired his creativity more powerfully. "Ode to a Nightingale" and "Bright Star" are outstanding works at this stage. Keats and Fanny admired each other and adored each other, but they both knew that this love would be difficult to marry. The family background of the two sides is very different. Keats is a poor boy and lives in Mr. Brown's home.

The film portrays this love very elegantly. I like this British-style, restrained and reserved love very much. Gathering less and leaving more, hesitating to speak, and appreciating silently, that love is always hidden in the corners of the eyes and the corners of the mouth, but in the depths of their hearts, they can feel the depth of their love.

The joy of being together, the pain after separation, the unseen torture, the audible laughter. The dialogue, the clothes, the scenery, the soundtrack in the movie are beautiful, very beautiful. Such beauty is just right. The gentleman's demeanor up to this point is not at all pretentious and rude.

Even at the moment when I can't control my emotions, the camera changes quickly. A few months have passed, and I let time silently smooth out all the misunderstandings and sadness. Life has no roots, and it floats like dust on the dust. Only time and years are eternal.

The expressions of Keats and Fanny, even if they were speechless, were completely immersed in love. I'm thinking that human life has multiple dimensions to measure. Living long is only one aspect, without love, without freedom, everyday life is just a mechanical repetition. Live a long time, so what?

Poetry encourages the soul to touch the mystery. Man must be a combination of contradictions, and I am like that. I don't know why, when I typed the word "poetry" on the computer, I felt a little ashamed in my heart. Poetry is too far away from us. Sometimes we are severely pressed to the ground. When we raise our heads, we also feel that the vast starry sky is laughing at us.

Keats himself is a poem, but destined to be too obscure

Bright Star quotes

  • [first lines between major players]

    [general chatter]

    Mrs. Brawne: Hello, Joy.

    Dilke Maid: Hello.

    Mrs. Brawne: Is all well?

Dilke Maid: Very good, thank you.

  • [last lines before credits]

Fanny Brawne: [speaking Keat's poem Bright Star] Bright star, would I were stedfast as thou art - / Not in lone splendour hung aloft the night / And watching, with eternal lids apart, / Like nature's patient, sleepless Eremite, / The moving waters at their priestlike task / Of pure ablution round earth's human shores, / Or gazing on the new soft-fallen masque / Of snow upon the mountains and the moors - / No - yet still stedfast, still unchangeable / Pillow'd upon my fair love's ripening breast, / To feel for ever its soft swell and fall, / Awake for ever in a sweet unrest, / Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath, / And so live ever - or else swoon to death.
