The short film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival for Best Short Film, the BAFTA Special Award and the Academy Award for Original Screenplay. This article briefly discusses its characteristics from five aspects.
The first, dark, dirty streets and broken bricks, is Paris in 1956. The director used the contrast of color and light to highlight the difference of this red balloon. In the film, the sky turns blue after the red and blue balloons meet, and the whole world has a bright feeling when the boy is taken up by the balloons at the end. It expresses that the power that truly makes life beautiful is freedom, innocence and hope.
The second is the use of long lenses. The film expresses the relationship between the boy and the balloon as playmates. Most of the long shots are used. For example, the red balloon has been following behind the boy. They are playing and caring for each other... The feelings between them are fully explained, giving the audience a profound impression. The sense of realism also makes the audience think that the red balloon is an excellent actor, ignoring that it is the essence of the balloon. At the same time, it shows the profound skill of the director.
Third, for the expression of details. For example, at the flea market, the boy stopped in front of a frame with a cute little girl. This scene shows his lonely, longing for friendship. And the red balloon, as his playmate, comforted him in a playful way, letting him know that he was not alone.
Fourth, is the use of off-screen space and depth-of-field lenses. Many of the shots in the film are relatively open, creating a strong sense of suspense and playing a great role in promoting the development of the story. There is a typical depth of field shot in the film. It's the 17th shot of the bad boys chasing the boy. In the foreground one of the bad boys is hiding behind a wall, in the middle scene the boy is running, in the background many boys are chasing. It has a good effect of infecting the audience's emotions, and it also realizes the scene scheduling in the same shot.
Fifth, is the main theme of the film - praise and expectation for freedom, innocence and hope; different understandings of loneliness and friendship. The encounter between the boy and the red balloon is a realistic and cruel fairy tale. In The Little Prince, the little prince says to the five thousand roses that look exactly like the only flower on his planet: "You are beautiful, but empty, and no one will die for you. Yes, generally passing by. Some people may think that my rose is very similar to yours, but one of her is better than all of you, because she is the rose I irrigated; she is the one I put under the glass to protect me from being The phoenix blows and kills the caterpillar rose for her; because she is the rose I am willing to listen to her whining, boasting, and even silence; because, she is my rose...you have nothing to do with her It's different, she's unique." The little boy and the little prince are different after all... Although he runs hard for the red balloon to escape the competition of the bad kids, even though he disregards the adults' disapproval of the red balloon... But, in When all the balloons rushed to him like being called, he chose these balloons of various colors to fly to the sky... When the boy flew to the sky, the camera did not give the boy, but the dirt on the ground. The red balloon, which is ugly and broken, no longer has the aura and happiness when it was with the boy. For freedom, innocence, hope, loneliness, friendship, etc., the director did not give a specific definition, but just let the audience experience and think for themselves.

God, I don't know that 56 years of stunts can make this look. "Flying House Globe" is from here.
