Short Review (Can't Fit) of "God Bless Bobby"

It's the best movie I've seen on this subject (though I haven't seen a few). The dialogues, details, and various stages (self-knowledge, family conflict, exploration, passing away, family knowledge) are complete and real (although I haven't experienced it, but I can empathize and poke my heart!) Psychiatrist, religious salvation, father's indifference escape, mother's fiery healing.

Conversations I remember:

-why you can't admit what I am
-what you've become !
-what I am!
-…accept me as I am or forget it.
-I won't have gay son.
-then mamy don't have the son
- Fine!!!!!

He stood on the edge of the overpass and recalled, recalling the happy family before, the tolerant and happy life he discovered after he came to the new city, the family he loved and his family that accepted them, and the last scene was the dialogue between his mother and him above. He was on the flyover and then fell down. This is not the end of the film, it is only half of it. The eulogy was still accusing his "sin", his "friend" came to mourn, and his mother threw away his used dishes and washed his hands vigorously.

The mother questioned the pro-gay priest, and the priest replied:

The people who write and interpret the Bible are mortals...
Those interpretations reflect the thinking and ideas of that era…
I think God doesn't mind our questioning, he may not be satisfied with our interpretation...
But I think blind faith is just as dangerous as no faith...
Sometimes questioning leads you to a deeper level of belief.

I didn't cry when Bobby left, I cried twice at the end of the movie. Bobby's diary, mother's confession, the last hug, the emotions arrive. Mutual aid and marches, meaningful. The second half of the film is actually about the family of the gay community and the family of the suicide, the angle and presentation are great.

Religion, sexual orientation, and ideas collide with each other. Taking Bobby's suicide as a node, the first half of the episode feels powerful family oppression from Bobby's perspective. The lack of black flashes in many places in the movie affects the smoothness of the movie. The death of Bobby and the drastic change in the mother's attitude seem to be paving the way. The timely shaking of the camera creates a sense of instability, the mother's ignorance and stubbornness make people gnashing, and the final speech is moving.

As you pray, don't forget that these children are waiting to be heard.

Prayers for Bobby quotes

  • Psychiatrist: A lot of times, confusions like Bobby's can be caused by a distant father or an overbearing mother.

Robert Griffith: Well, I had both and I am fine.

  • Rev. Michaels: When temptation is all around you, Faith, is not enough. It requires discipline, not just mental, but physical. Who would like to share their story?

Teri: [she stands up] I used to be so unhappy, I stayed out all night, I talked back to my mother, since coming here and accepting Jesus as my savior. I've changed. My mom and I are like best friends now.

    Rev. Michaels: That's great, Teri.
