Homesickness

Old time!

1. The scene where Sam takes Sonny and the fool to go fishing is a very important scene. Sam mentioned his youth and the girl who bet him on horseback crossing the river. The lion king Sam spent his entire life indulging in those beautiful days, muttering to himself: "Old time, old time". When he was young, Sam was very beautiful. He owned the best industry in this town and once had the best girl in this town. The times are changing too fast, and everything is right and wrong. People with a little bit of knowledge and brains all went to large places to seek development. Only the empty and dusty streets and a group of crooked children were left in the small town. Only the shabby "Royal" sign seemed to be still trying to tell. The glory of the past. The era of heroes and cowboys is long gone, and now is the world of mine bosses and coal bosses. The once beloved girl fell into the arms of the coal boss, the younger generation is imitating the fashion of the big city lamely, and many good pasts no longer exist. Sam is still here, running that outdated property. He bet on the local children's rugby team. Although they couldn't even learn to "grackle", he got the phrase "Who told you that you don't have a good hometown" from the winning coal bosses. Sam is nostalgic for this place, deeply in love with it, because of homesickness, this is a complex of inexplicable ways. He wants to do his best to continue the old times and traditions. Just like that fool, sweeping the streets in a windy day, but can never clean the dust.

2. The will of the lion king Sam is very special: he left the billiard hall to Sonny, the cafe to Jennifer, the cinema to the old Miss Moss, and one thousand dollars to the fool. You might think that this is just Sam's pure intention to help the weak, but in fact it is not. Sam's arrangement is profound. Deep down in his heart, he knew that only these four people, like him, had a deep attachment to this dilapidated small town. They would die in the small town with nostalgia and continue the old days.

Sonny and Dunn

3. Sonny and Dunn are the best partners who grew up in a small town, but they are two completely different people. Sam's favorite children during his lifetime were Sonny and Fool, but he was relatively indifferent to Dunn. They tasted the taste of broken love in the same girl Jessica. In the face of a broken relationship, Dunn’s choice was to “go away and fly away”, and Sonny once wanted to leave, but he was still unable to break free from the embrace of the “old woman”. The role of "old woman" here is an obvious metaphor. Isn't she exactly this dilapidated hometown? In order to maintain the billiard hall that Sam left for him, Sonny had to choose to work in the mine, but the old lion king did not look away. No matter what he went through, Sonny could not escape here. This is his hometown and his final destination.

Last movie

4. Sonny and Dunn went to the cinema of the old Miss Moss to watch the last movie. The cinema was about to close because people stayed at home 24 hours a day to watch TV. Old Moss was sad, but she could do nothing. She said that if Sam was alive, there might be a way. Sonny has long been keenly aware that everything in the town has changed since Sam's death, an era is over, and a new era is coming. The truck driver killed the fool and was still wondering why the children in this town were all stupid. Sonny stayed in the arms of the "old woman", and there were repetitive, monotonous, brainwashed soap advertisements on the TV, and everything came to an abrupt end. This is the ultimate homesickness.

    # Rhythm# has obvious rhythm rules in the use of audio-visual elements. First watch it with the sound turned on, and then watch it again with the sound turned off, and carefully appreciate the rhythm between the picture and the editing.

80 A sensual movie, much more interesting than "American Style Painting". The characters in the film have outstanding personalities, and the young actors are a bit young in their performances, but the actors over the middle-aged and older perform their respective characters very vividly. The film’s director skills are very good, but the narrative skills are relatively weak. It cannot escape the negligence in the narrative of the art film, the details are redundant or insufficient, the dramatic arrangement is not enough, and the emotional narrative is too loose.

The Last Picture Show quotes

  • Sam the Lion: I just come out here to get a little scenery. Too pretty a day to spend in town. You wouldn't believe how this country's changed. First time I seen it, there wasn't a mesquite tree on it. Or, a prickly pear neither. I used to own this land, you know. First time I watered a horse at this tank was more than 40 years ago. I reckon the reason why I always drag you out here is probably l'm as sentimental as the next feller when it comes to old times. Old times. I brought a young lady swimming out here once - more than 20 years ago. It was after my wife had lost her mind. And my boys was dead. Me and this young lady was pretty wild, I guess. In pretty deep. We used to come out here on horseback and go swimmin' without no bathin' suits. One day she wanted to swim the horses across this tank. Kind of a crazy thing to do, but we done it anyway. She bet me a silver dollar she could beat me across. She did. This old horse I was riding didn't want to take the water. But she was always looking for somethin' to do like that. Somethin' wild. I bet she's still got that silver dollar.

  • Sam the Lion: Her and her husband was young and miserable with one another - like so many young married folks are. I thought they'd change with some age; but, it didn't turn out that way.

Sonny Crawford: Is being married always so miserable?

Sam the Lion: No. Not really. About 80 percent of the time, I guess.
