"Wild Pear Tree" Essays

"Wild Pear Tree" is the second Ceylon movie I have watched so far. The last one was "Hibernation", it took three days to finish it a few years ago, and this one took two days. After all, the film has too much information, and if you don't watch it carefully, you may miss some key elements and even nodes.

So I am even more sure that Ceylon may not be called the master of scene management, but if it involves dialogue, Ceylon can firmly establish itself among the world's top film directors. Yes, Ceylon definitely can afford the title of "Master" in terms of the dialogue construction of characters and the hierarchical construction of line language.

The literary youth returned to their hometown after finishing their college career, not full of excitement, hesitation, incomprehension, sadness, resistance, questioning, and agnosticism filled their hearts. Longing for non-utilitarian dialogue with the world, and hoping that his personal and authorist literary works can be published, and as a result, he is increasingly lonely on the road to bumping into walls. Father and son, family, affection, deceased person, politics, religion, literature, utilitarianism, exquisite national self-interest...like the thorns of ordinary life, tangible or intangible, enough to make them bruised and bruised. Choose to escape from the homeland and stay away from the barbaric growth of the wild pear tree, or continue to use one's own strength to provoke and confront this world where politics, religion, literature, and even family affection have been deeply whitewashed by exquisite national egoism?

However, these two are not the way to solve the problem. After all, the wild pear tree looks ugly, and its fruit is fine and ugly, but if you let go of your prejudices and are willing to savor carefully, then its sweet taste is very likely to exceed expectations. Putting aside his prejudices and reconciling with reality, he found the little intellectual dad who was jailed for gambling like life, and his unremarkable but ubiquitous paternal care, he found that this place is like a wild pear tree. In a land that grows so barbarously and willingly as mediocrity, in addition to exquisite egoism, there are other things worthy of nostalgia. Love and reconciliation are the ultimate salvation that exists here.

All the above-mentioned details and stories, what I perceive or ignore, all come from the massive dialogue in the film. Therefore, this is a three-hour feature film that promotes the development of the plot with almost pure dialogue. The successful construction of the dialogue benefits from the real change of time and space, from Ceylon's strong control over the language logic system, and from the solid foundation of lines, body language and expressions of the actors in the mirror. Even if it is a fixed position, even the common dialogue scheduling can be full of momentum and variables, making the audience gritted their teeth, afraid but looking forward to the next second, whether the characters will lose control of their emotions due to the escalating language confrontation, or even cause them Physical violence.

Therefore, although "Wild Pear Tree" was nominated for Palme d'Or at the 71st Cannes Film Festival, it did not win a substantial award, but its failure to win does not obliterate its true value. After all, after four years of "Hibernation", Ceylon has brewed such a movie. It is certainly worth celebrating to win the award. If not, then in this way, have a three-hour exchange with the world and listen to the four years. The voice that Lan longed to make was enough to gain a lot.

There are a lot of dialogues that distract the audience, but when the theme of the film is stripped away by the dense dialogue, there is a possibility that a group of unknown characters randomly interpret life in the space and time of the film. Words are revealed. Young people of every era are determined to resist vulgarity, and eventually become attached to vulgarity. The film is nothing more than a retrospective of this "should have done". The constantly changing world outlook of the returning youth has contributed to the completion of the story, but in the face of the historical context of fatalism, it is an inevitable result that the son repeats his father's experience. The restless, let him grow; the future, let it happen. ★★★★

When Ceylon became obsessed with intricate dialogue, he exposed himself as a director. In the final analysis, literature is too extravagant for most people, especially those who dream of achieving literature. It is like digging a well, either digging out water or hanging in the well to hang. The flipping of several dreams is a bit outdated. It's a story I've always wanted to write, thanks to Ceylon's exploration.
