Now, I don’t know if Gatsby should be infatuated or stupid?
I used to really like this short story of Fitzgerald. I like the ingenious coincidence of the story, the irony and black humor, and Gatsby's infatuation and romance.
But as I grow older, and as I watch and think repeatedly, I no longer feel that Gatsby is purely a person who exists for love, but that he is a sad figure influenced by the secular public.
His infatuation for Anna has actually surpassed the love of Aina herself, but he admired the status and money she represents.
In fact, it was not that he didn't know that she was a secular, realistic, and greedy person of power and wealth, but her beauty and status were what he really wanted in his heart, so this desire became a possession of her.
So he worked so hard in the smuggling business to build himself into a great person who is respected by the rich as a wealthy man.
He also worked so hard to organize various celebrity dance parties, and the tricks that only Pomeranians paid attention to were actually to some extent satisfy his own loss and unfairness.
But he made a mistake that the wealthy of the upper class would not make, that is, he moved his heart.
He thought he could get her heart by doing this, and thought, don't you just like money and status? Since I can give it to you, I can finally let Anna choose me this time.
But he was wrong. No matter how rich he was, no matter how squandered, no matter how standing he was, he still couldn't change the character he was born with. To a certain extent, he could not achieve the indifference and selfishness of a rich man who was born rich and squandered luxury.
In any case, he cannot fully integrate into the upper class world, because their values are gradually ingrained in the accumulation of decades.
So Anna still did not choose him in the end, and even Gatsby's death was only a temporary sadness for her.
Anna and her husband have an affair, tortured each other, but can't leave each other. Because they are so alike, the same selfishness, the same indifference, and the same snobbery and money worship.
This is a "tradition" that those who make a fortune with their own hands cannot inherit from their bones.
Therefore, Anna and her husband's affair have become victims, but they are victims of their loneliness and venting, and her impact on him is actually minimal. In any case, people who are not in the same way cannot walk together. This is the truth that their two common affair cannot understand.
Although Anna's husband enjoys the excitement and happiness that the owner of the car repair station brings her, he can't give her a future anyway. The disparity between status and status is too great, and it is impossible for him to give up his current social status and honor for her and make himself honorable.
But the owner of the auto repair shop didn’t understand. She thought he bought her luxury goods and met all her requirements as loving her and petting her. She also lost herself in the process and just got the taste of money. How could she? How about giving up such a lucky cat easily?
Because she has already begun to want to continue this kind of life, indulging in money and unable to extricate herself.
What Gatsby didn't understand was that even if he had money, he couldn't really grasp Anna's heart. They are not the same kind of people and cannot walk into each other's hearts. What Anna is greedy for is Gatsby's game of money change. This change in perspective and her disappointment with her husband give her new sustenance.
But as soon as her husband summoned her, she went back stubbornly. She was unable to give up everything and give up the stability of her current position, and she was unwilling to take this risk for a poor boy who was once.
But a person as smart as Gatsby was actually lost in his desire for money. He wants her to prove his own status change, which may be a kind of pursuit brought about by long-term inferiority that he himself did not notice.
Therefore, in front of the selfish and indifferent but powerful people, Gatsby and the car repair shop owner lost in this game. This may be Fitzgerald's rascal. In any case, no matter how rich a lower-born lippa is one day, it will not necessarily be recognized by the upper class.
This is the stark reality that Fitzgerald has shown us. Because the reality is so terrible, we sometimes don't want to believe it.
