French romantic classic

The film "Lover", adapted from the autobiographical novel of French writer Marguerite Duras, tells a bleak and moving love story between a French girl and a Chinese girl in Saigon.
This movie, which became a sensation because of the bold and passionate drama between Leung Ka Fai and the teenage star Jane Margie, has always been labeled as erotic. Of course, as far as the plot is concerned, it does not break away from the stereotypes of romantic films, and naturally it is not exciting, but it is undeniable that the whole film is full of an exotic romantic mood. Even those erotic scenes, in addition to being passionate and hot, also have a unique and romantic atmosphere. The heroine may be due to her age, she is naturally immature, but her temperament and acting skills are not very prominent. Only Leung Ka-fai is the only one who is memorable. Whether it is his naked body, PP, elegant appearance, and skilled acting skills, it is very memorable and fascinating.
Compared with the remake of "Lolita" with a similar theme, it also describes the shocking indecent love (pedophilia?). I still prefer the elegant, delicate, light and lazy "Lover" French romance.

It seems that foreigners will never be able to capture the thoughts of Chinese people, no matter how deep or not.

The review is the film itself. I don't like this heroine, it doesn't fit my aesthetic. Compared with the original book, this love is obviously too thin and hasty to express in a movie way, and even a few straightforward sex scenes make me feel boring. If I have the opportunity, I should learn French and read the original work. I can only say that the translated works made me misunderstand Duras' literary attainments. Perhaps the charm of literature to film lies in the fact that it builds the reader's rich imagination in order to be obsessed.

The Lover quotes

  • The Elder Brother: Do you want to fight? Take care little buddy. It'd take two of you to do the job.

The Chinaman: Oh no. A lot more than that. Four of me. You have no idea how weak I am...

  • The Chinaman: My body no longer wants the one who does not love.
