Quite unpopular movie. I went to a certain well-known chain theater and gave back 5 shows on the day of the premiere. The next day it became 2—still a very unfriendly time. And not only the subject matter is a bit unpopular, but the form also has certain limitations-cartoons. This makes those middle-aged people who have finally made time to watch movies feel sorry for themselves.
Let me talk about the background first. The film is adapted from the teenage novel "Pavana's Waiting" by Canadian writer Deborah Alice. The story about the protagonist Pavana is a series of novels, and this is just one of them. As an extended reading, I personally recommend "A Thousand Splendid Suns", "I Don't Want You to Die to Nothing" and "Across the Middle East for a Hundred Years". After all, the target readers of the original book are teenagers, a group of people who need the so-called courage, determination and courage to grow up. And if you really want to understand Afghan society, the tragedy brought about by war, and the tragedy of Afghan women, the above three books should be more ideal choices.
But the fact that a movie telling the story of Afghanistan was shown in theaters is exciting enough. Even if it packs the ideology of the Western world, even if this is an Afghan film that does not speak Pashto, Dari, or even Persian, I think it is more meaningful than those younger or dazzling cg animations. At least let us in the prosperous world know that there is still such a group of people in the world. When the whole world is striding forward to higher, faster and stronger, they are still trapped in rigid traditions, living in raging wars and complete human rights. Deprived of the environment. There is still such a terrible social system in the world that will force underage girls in the family to become "family breadwinners", and this is only the tip of the iceberg, a trivial tip.
There are not many cartoons that are still in hand-drawn use these days. Seeing each character’s single-color eyes, indistinct hairs, and almost rough light and shadows in the animation, I actually put all the expressions: fear, happiness, surprise, longing, naughty, sad, brave and so on. The performance of the activity is so in place, it makes people have a kind of primitive touch. It proves once again that no matter how advanced the technology is, only the quality of the story is the true criterion for judging the quality of a movie.
Speaking of the story. What makes this animation special is its nesting structure. The people in the story are telling stories. Pavana, the protagonist in the movie story is a bread winner, and the protagonist in the story she tells is also a bread winner. The story in the story first appeared as Pawana to appease her uneasy brother. After Pawana went to find her father outside the prison for the first time and was beaten, her mother made up the story. After the little boy fell off the cliff, he was awakened by the sound of drums, and the old drummer told him how to defeat the King of Elephants. Mom was comforting Pawana, giving her courage and confidence. Then while working in the brick factory, Pawana told the story to the exhausted Trevor. Trehua worked with her to create this story, so the little boy had a name, Sulaiman, the name of Pawana's brother. So the terrible thing that has been chasing Suleiman behind is the kind old horse.
At the climax of the story. Pawana waited anxiously outside the prison, fear and panic enveloped her-the sound of war, artillery fire, the passage of time, darkness and uncertain rescue. So the object of telling and listening this time became herself. Sulaiman chose to face the king alone, as lonely and scared as Pawana. The climax is cut in Pawana’s mother, Pawana and the fictional Suleyman. At this time, Suleyman’s story has been merged with Pawana’s story. In her mother's eyes, Pawana, who resembled her elder brother, looked very much like Suleiman. In Pawana's eyes, the little boy in her story has been given the name of Suleiman since he has carried the identity of her brother and has become a source of her strength.
Movies are stories, but the people in this story are also making up stories. They draw strength from the story, and civilization is passed down in the story. Even in the abyss of hell, they can get the freedom of the soul and the undead soul. The story gives them the power to move the dark gate, revealing a faint light. When we look at their stories and the stories they tell, we also seem to have received a redemption.
When life is not difficult, where is the world not ugly, when it is difficult and ugly, will the spectrum of human nature illuminate the human soul and spirit beyond the visible range of the naked eye.
Tell a truth. After the movie was screened, the staff was a little girl, she asked me curiously: Sister, is this good-looking?
Before I could say a good word, she immediately said: You are the only audience since we screened these 6 shows. I am dumb. Walking in the corridor of the movie hall, one after another cracking sound, it is estimated that which villain is destroying the earth, mankind is waiting for the salvation of superheroes. I sigh, in the flourishing age, how much do we know about war?
Then on the light rail, a group of junior high school girls twittered standing next to me. Then a girl said to her companion: You look like a boy, right? I blanked my eyes, and wanted to sigh that the world is getting worse and worse. But I turned my head to see, that group of girls have the most youthful faces and the most ignorant smiles-real smiles that are hard to understand.
So I hope that they will always be so unscrupulous or even knowing the heights of the sky, and I don't want them to have the maturity and perseverance of Pawana. If the purity and depth of human nature are really to be tested by war, then I would rather never know how pure and deep it is.
