About our faith

A movie about faith, about growth.

I find that I have gradually been able to appreciate the beliefs and pursuits of others from my own perspective and observe their evolution.

One’s beliefs are changing

There are all kinds of beliefs in the world, and that is the meaning of everyone's existence.

Everyone's belief formation is closely related to the environment in which they come into contact. Poverty makes people yearn for prosperity and pressures people to yearn for freedom. The changes in Changez in the play come from this.

A person's belief cannot be left to freedom. Its firmness and purity are not innate, and we need to take care of it carefully. Therefore, we need to get in touch with things that are good for our faith, and stay away from the factors that shake our faith.

How to view changes in beliefs

On how to evaluate a belief.

Intuitively, there should be no distinction between high and low beliefs. But whether there is a difference between advanced and backward beliefs, and what kind of differences exist between different types of beliefs.

Since beliefs are based on our worldview, there should be differences in beliefs based on real, false, partial or more comprehensive worldviews.

These are things that I don't understand yet.

Open faith and black and white faith

These young men were engaged in their own valuation.
Just like Underwood Samson.
Moving human beings in and out of binary columns.
Worker, reliability.
American, Pakistani.
Martyr, infidel. Alive, dead.
I was tired of the reduction.
I was tired of deciding from a distant perch
the fate of people I did not know.
Yes, I am Pakistani.
Yes, I am a Muslim.
Yes, I am an opponent of your country's assault on mine.
But that's not all that I am.
We are both more than these things, Bobby.
I've never taken up arms and I never will.

This is an explanation of Changez in the play, showing two different forms of belief.

And about the spread of faith

When people are young, or when their worldview has not yet formed, by instilling relevant concepts into them, it is easy to lead them to form corresponding beliefs, no matter how outrageous their beliefs appear to us.

Another film that discusses counterterrorism, only this time a Pakistani tells his story. In fact, the male protagonist was willing to integrate into the United States at the beginning, but his transformation was more caused by Americans. The more fearful we are about something, the more powerful we make the other person feel. In fact, fear can never overcome fear. The same goes for violence.

American dream is not something that everyone can achieve. No matter how smart you are, Muslims are the most unfortunate after 9/11. Of course, the Chinese will also have their troubles.

The Reluctant Fundamentalist quotes

  • Changez: Pretend I'm him.

  • Changez: [about watching the events of 9/11 unfold] In that moment, I should have felt sorrow or anger, but all I felt was awe. What audacity. The ruthlessness of the act was surpassed only by its genius. And David had struck Goliath. I'm sorry if my reaction to the attacks has offended you, Bobby. I hope you see that I'm not celebrating at the death of 3,000 innocents, just as you would not celebrate the death of 100,000 in Baghdad or Kabul, for that matter. But before conscience kicks in, have you never felt a split-second of pleasure at arrogance brought low?

Bobby Lincoln: And you ask me why they're harrassing your family. Let's just cut the bullshit, okay? You believe in violence as a tool for social change. You teach a course in violent revolution at Lahore University. Your lectures are full of anti-American rhetoric.

Changez: [cut to him teaching] We will wipe the blood of the invaders from our swords!

Bobby Lincoln: If that weren't enough, you were spotted at an Asal Mujahideen meeting with Mustafa Fazil, a known cell leader.

Changez: [cut to said meeting] I think I can help.

Mustafa Fazil: I knew you would.

Bobby Lincoln: Last night, Anse Rainier was kidnapped. And this morning, your class was canceled. If you're just an innocent bystander, Changez, why were you hiding? Only guilty people hide.

Changez: Your candor is appreciated, Bobby, but your conclusions are wrong.
