Technology is a Tower of Babel

First sort out some valuable viewpoints in the whole film, which are divided into the fierce "revolutionaries" led by George Lucas and the "conservatives" represented by Christopher Nolan:

Revolutionary:

1. Film shooting needs to be developed, and only one day later can I see the picture (sample) that I took, with a rough texture. The digital camera is "ready to take", more detailed and precise, and easy to retake.

2. DV is light, direct, visual sense, captures the moment, the movement of the camera is used to express emotions in the film language "Family Banquet" can obtain a lot of shooting materials.

3. The low cost of digital shooting means that shooting is more free and unrestricted

4. Digital photography is highly plastic and gives mankind the supreme control right, but this can also easily make some people's attitudes towards it careless.

5. CGI digital animation technology is the fantasy of human beings in movies. Digital photography represents creation.

6. Winning an Oscar for "Slumdog Millionaire" means that the digital age is truly accepted by people (argument)

7. Digital film is a combination of art and technology

8. Digital technology is changing the way movies tell stories, but not just movies, this is a huge change. If art is not side by side with technology, it will eventually be left behind by the times.

Old school:

1. The director will watch the samples later so that he can concentrate on the performance and the action (Martin Scorsese)

2. The actor cannot enter the scene and asks to rewatch his own shooting, which makes the actor more self-conscious

3. The profession of a photographer is easy to be questioned by many people, the magic is no longer, the aura is no longer

4. Producers and investors self-righteously interfere with film creation

It brings a completely different feeling to filming. Digital photography is more like group shooting, which combines multiple views, while film photography has a clear division of labor and less interference.

5. The actors and the team spend so much time to concentrate, they can’t always come back

6. The tempo of digital editing is too fast to think.

7. Regarding film, no matter the price or the meaning, everyone will face it with respect.

8. For CGI, the power of the photographer is assigned to DI

9.3D technology will only be popular for a while. The success of "Avatar" 10. lies in its creation in 3D, not grandstanding.

Not only has the social space been greatly extended to virtualization, but also movies. People are becoming more accustomed to experiencing movies on small screens instead of movie theaters.

11. Technology has made art no longer the patent of a few people, and many people have joined the ranks of artistic creation. Everyone has paper and pen, but how many great stories have been written on that piece of paper. This is the story that happened in the movie. Movies are everywhere, but there are many advantages and disadvantages, so gradually no one cares about taste anymore.

12. The archive of movies is very important. The problem of archiving in all digital formats has not yet been resolved. Only celluloid (film) can be stored for a hundred years, as long as there is light, it can be watched, and there will be no problem of format elimination. Film is a capture and storage medium at the same time.

"The essence of film is storytelling, so film and digital filming are essentially just a matter of form." Because they have something in common with technology, they will not be left behind like film, but they can only choose to compromise. Make a guess, in the future, all the art created by mankind will survive in the altar of technology, looking forward to the unknown baptism?

Technology is pervasive, we can only surrender or perish, and surrender means to be re-created and defined. Film, as an art that has lasted for 122 years, may be fortunate because it has the potential to be recreated. Unfortunately, it lies in the loss of the spirit and technology of traditional filmmaking, and the loss of the audience's details and feelings of film.

What's interesting is that despite the development of digital cinema to the present, it is still chasing the quality and style of film. I remembered a passage, "We continued to struggle forward, sailing against the current, and constantly pushed backwards until we returned to the past." The transformation started with a new choice, but ended with the disappearance of the old way.

Technology brings virtual pleasure. Especially in art, this kind of pleasure is empty, like having sex with a dummy. Its existence is contrary to human beings. Eventually humans will be replaced. Film and video allude to this. Technology is just another "Tower of Babel" built out of human arrogance. (Especially when I saw the phrase "Everything can be solved" in the George Lucas film)

We all believe that things are man-made, and perhaps the potential of mankind is unlimited. This is just an optimistic idea. We panic about all new things, but in the end we will respond with expectations.

Negation is painful, but recollection is easy.

Side by Side quotes

  • Keanu Reeves: Unlike film cameras, you don't have to wait a day to see what you've captured. They're no longer dailies, they're immediatelies.

  • Martin Scorsese: The problem for me is that I still think you need to see rushes later in order to concentrate with the performances or just the movement. I still think you need to see them at a special time.
