Eight Notes on "The Gaze of Ulysses"

1. The gaze is the gaze from the past to the present, the forgotten gaze on the memory, the gaze of the dead on the living, and the gaze of the movie on the audience. They constitute the real subject because they are always separated from the definition.

2. The real hope is not the witnesses, but the passers-by, the viewer, the messenger of Kafka from the castle, and what he carries is the promise of salvation that is always late.

3. "I cry because I can't love you". In the wilderness of time, in the endless fog, at the end of the eternal history full of ruins, I am destined to be alone. There is no love as redemption, no eternal alliance, nothing can resist the wind from heaven to hell.

4. There is no future in the pursuit of history, but you lose the present while gaining history. The present, which is still in war, is being forgotten at the speed of light as quickly and uncontrollably as the past history, and no one has recorded them, in the form of matter.

5. The real subject is history rather than people as individuals. All women and loves that represent desire and individual realization are just symbols. They are pale and beautiful like ghosts, without a past or a future. The protagonist, as the only image throughout, is just a spectator and witness of history. We don't know anything about him.

6. In the place where Lenin, the idol, fell, the lonely mortal protagonist stood up, and took his place at the bow of the ship to face the endless running after the boat on the shore and drawing a cross on his chest. With an expression of suffering.

7. A large portrait of Chaplin in a hidden movie studio. This is a story about tragedy. Antigone's name is mixed with unfamiliar names, and in a small hotel amidst gunshots, he is toasted by two people who are facing the truth of history instead of escaping from them. But Chaplin looked at the two tragic heroes mockingly.

8. In Benjamin's writing, film, photography, and all things in the new era of mechanical reproduction represent a certain hope for the future, and the lost unfinished silent film precisely records this transitional era of gestation. But even they have been involved in a huge tragic historical wave. The movie ends with death in the fog, and does not provide a hint of rebirth.

It's really a grand and profound masterpiece, but it's trapped in a variety of presentations, a lot of symbolic shots are getting more and more replaced, and the plot is constantly being squeezed. Harvey Celtic performed extremely well, and at the end the crying part in the fog is reminiscent of the ending of "Crying Prairie". Looking for movies, looking for dreams, looking for memories.

Ulysses' Gaze quotes

  • A: I didn't expect to see you suddenly, I guess... For a moment, I thought I was dreaming of you... Like I did all these past years... Do you remember the railway station?... You were shivering in the rain, like now... The wind was blowing hard... I was going away, but I meant to come back soon... And then I got lost, wandering along strange routes... If I could stretch out my hands, I would touch you... And time will be held again... But something is holding me back... I wish I could tell you I'd return... But something is holding me back... The journey isn't over, not yet!

  • A: Good night, good night... Parting is such sweet sorrow... that I shall say good night, till it be tomorrow... sleep dwell upon thine eyes, peace in thy breasts... would I were sleep and peace, so sweet to rest... Hence will I to my ghostly father's cell... his help to crave, and my dear hap to tell!
