Field platoon (essay)

At the beginning of the film, the male protagonist Taylor came to the jungle somewhere on the battlefield in Vietnam. From the obvious immaturity at the beginning and the heroic fighting in the back, it can be seen that Taylor is a very courageous, righteous and ideal boy. However, perhaps this war was doomed to a tragic ending from the beginning. Taylor first entered the war when he found the enemy but could not move to avoid exposing his embarrassment. The helplessness in his eyes is unforgettable. The contradiction between Barnes and Elaine in the film is particularly brilliant. People often say that war obliterates humanity, but there are people who have experienced war and still have good intentions. Barnes and Elaine are the typical representatives of these two types of people, the devil and the angel. Only when Barnes pulled the trigger at Elaine did he realize that war had so thoroughly aroused the killing in human nature. When Taylor and the others temporarily withdrew from the battlefield at the time by helicopter, the two or three shots of Elaine were struggling to survive under the pursuit of the North Vietnamese Army. The scene when they were still in disaster was also very shocking. I have to say this. The plot setting is too brilliant, and it has an impact on the cognition of ordinary people. Taylor consciously stood on Elaine's side and insisted not to kill innocent people indiscriminately. But when he squeezed the trigger against Barnes in the last fierce battle on the battlefield of Vietnam, I don't know what he felt in his heart, did he become a killing machine? Perhaps the last tears Taylor left on the helicopter leaving the battlefield contained all his own feelings. His departure took away the fear of war and the innocence in his heart.

I like war movies very much, but in my impression, I see that most Vietnam War movies are not as good as World War II movies. Oliver Stone's film has won an Oscar. It is said to be the best filmed in the Vietnam War. I think it's an overstatement.

Unlike the expected Oliver Stone, I feel that this movie is relatively mild among the four masters of the Vietnam War. Although the revenge drama in the last paragraph is very gray, it is still easy to be accepted by the public as a whole. When the male protagonist kills his teammates who betrayed his teammates, it means being assimilated by the war purgatory, the grievances that cannot be placed, the reasons for killing, the death of oneself and the other, hatred and anger gradually become out of control and become the normal state of lack of goal.

Platoon quotes

  • Bunny: [to Private Taylor] Fucking pussy, man. He's laughing at you. That's the way the gook laughs.

    [to Vietnamese villager]

Bunny: Yeah, sure you are. You're real sorry, ain't you? You're just crying your little hearts out about Sandy and Sal and Manny.

Sgt. O'Neill: Forget about it, Bunny, huh? Let's go. What do you say?

[Bunny hits the Vietnamese villager over the head with the butt of his shotgun]

Bunny: Holy shit! You see that fucking head come apart, man? I never seen brains like that before, man. I bet you the old bitch runs the whole fucking show, man. She probably cut Manny's throat. She would probably cut my balls off if she had the chance.

Sgt. O'Neill: Bunny, we leave now. Nobody saw a fucking thing! You understand me, Taylor? Not a fucking thing.

Bunny: Fucking woman, man. Come on, man, let's fucking do her, man. Let's do this whole fucking village!

  • Chris Taylor: [after taking down a group of NVA soldiers] I got two of them fuckers, man!

    Rhah: I got one!

Chris Taylor: [cups hand to his mouth] Ho Chi Minh sucks dead dick!

    [whoops]
