Terminator without end

Regarding the future, there are always two basic scenarios in my imagination before entering junior high school: First, a large number of highly intelligent robots are used for me, and they can do whatever they want. The second is that humans can travel freely in space and go wherever they want. However, at the beginning of "Terminator 2" released in 1991, the robot crushed the human skull with one foot, and also crushed my dream of the future.

The Terminator Ends the Dream of the Future The

"Terminator" series of movies ended my beautiful but naive imagination of the future world. The future it depicts is actually the end of mankind. What is even more worrying is that the "Terminator" robots used to slaughter humans in the future can actually come to the present society and continue to kill people.

"Terminator 1" was filmed in the 1980s, and it gave me the impression that it was more of a thriller than a science fiction film. The T-800 Terminator was chasing Sarah with his teeth and claws everywhere, which made me feel nervous when I was only in junior high school. The plot of the film is a simple hunt and kill game. In the end, the "Terminator" is destroyed, the warrior sacrifices, and Sarah is pregnant.

Although the plot of "Terminator 2" filmed in 1991 has not changed, the director's worries about a possible future nuclear war gave the film a deep theme. Sarah flapped the barbed wire helplessly in her dream, seeing the children burned like paper by the nuclear explosion light radiation, making people feel that the crisis is around, but we can do nothing. In the early 1990s, when the "Star Wars" project was in full swing, "Terminator 2" was like an apocalypse: human beings studied how to destroy their enemy’s weapons and destroy themselves. In the end, they could only face Judgment Day. The advent.

In addition to the rather profound themes, there are special effects that made "Terminator 2" famous in the history of science fiction movies. Director and screenwriter James Cameron creatively imagined the liquid metal robot T-1000, which was created seamlessly by "Industrial Magic Light" using the CG technology of the last century. In addition, although Congliang "Terminator" played by Schwarzenegger is a rock-like robot with a cold surface, it exudes a strong human touch. I believe that many people are the same as I did. When they saw him finally having to destroy themselves, they felt reluctant and sighed.

So when "Terminator 3" was released more than 10 years later, I rushed into the cinema like I was going to meet an old friend. However, I was disappointed to find that the muscles of Lao Shi, who was nearly 50 years old, had lost their elasticity. Not only was his movements not as good as before, but most importantly, the temperament of the tragic hero of the year was gone. The plot of the sequel 3 is basically the same as that of "Terminator 2". The young John Connor has grown up and found a girlfriend. Other changes that keep pace with the times are that the killer robot is characterized by its ability to control automatic machines to eliminate humans, and the "Skynet" system awakens itself and attacks humans. This may warn that the over-reliance of human beings on the Internet and automatic equipment in the 21st century will cause big troubles. "Die Hard 4.0" released last year also expressed this concern.

Terminator 4 who pays tribute to Terminator 2

Before watching "Terminator 4", I guessed what kind of robot each side will send back to the past this time. But the movie puts the scene directly into 2018, and John becomes the leader of the resistance army and directly confronts the "Terminator" machine army controlled by "Skynet". The future scenes and individual sections in the movie have the shadow of some fashionable science fiction movies before. The overall gray tone and the faceless sunlight are similar to the "Matrix" series. It is estimated that the computer system does not like to bask in the sun. The heavy rain hidden in the Resistance Headquarters poured down on the rough sea, reminding me of the scene in "Star Station Front: The Clone War". The most obvious part of the bridge is that the robot also throws into a big basket after catching a human. This is the same as those hapless experiences in the "World War".

From a certain point of view, "Terminator 4" can't escape the big clichés of the "prequel complex" and can be considered a prequel to the "Terminator" series, because one of the main lines of the film is how John's father became a resistance fighter. In "Terminator 1", John's father, Carl, went back to protect John's mother, but this time it was the grown-up John doing everything possible to rescue Carl, who was still a kid at the time. Seeing this, I had to force my brain not to make a logical analysis of the rationality of this matter, and force myself not to fall into the philosophical contemplation of "the chicken or the egg". I guess the screenwriter himself didn't even want to understand, just bluffing people here.

Judging from this simple plot alone, apart from the gorgeous stunt scenes, "Terminator 4" may hardly be attractive. But fortunately, Cheng Yaojin came out halfway: a "transformer" Max, who has nothing to do with the John family, became the main line of the movie. Max is a biological robot modified by the "Skynet" system, but he himself still realizes that he is a human being, and he spares no effort to help the refugees who are hunted down by the machine. But the director always makes me feel that this guy is a little unreliable, and I have been worried that he will turn back into two or five sons in the end. After being brainwashed, he will kill humans who were once friends, and stage a tragedy of brothers' rebelliousness. This is also a brilliant suspense arranged by the director.

This sequel is full of plots that pay tribute to "Terminator 2". When John set out to save his father before packing up, the music he played was "You should be mine" by the "Guns and Roses" band. In "Terminator 2", when young John rides a motorcycle through the residential area, the same song is played on his tape recorder. The "Terminator 2" duel between good and evil took place in the steel mill. The fourth part of the final battle of life and death was in the workshop where the "Terminator" robot was produced. The same sparks splashed and the same machines roared. In the second part, Sarah, John's mother, was forced to retreat on the steel trail by T-1000, and in the fourth part, it was replaced by John herself. Even the grenade gun used in the final fight with the robot is the same. But the most surprising tribute is Lao Shi's appearance again. Although he showed his face for 5 seconds, it is necessary because he is already the spokesperson of the "Terminator".

The difference is that "Terminator 4" has nothing to worry about this time. If the first three films are full of a sense of crisis for the future of mankind, in this film, when the horrible future truly becomes a reality, the film expresses the praise of the tenacious humanity under the white horror. At the end of the film, John said, "The power of the human mind is different from the machine." The subtext is: The power of the human mind can defeat the machine. The machine can only execute code commands rigidly. Humans’ emotional thinking is flexible and creative.

If you think about it carefully, you will find that John can become the leader of the Resistance Army because of the gift of Skynet. If it weren’t for it to send robots back to the assassination, John’s mother would never know what the future would look like, nor would he meet John’s biological father, nor would he specifically train for leaders as mentioned in Part 2. John. It is the stiffness and weakness of the machine that creates trouble for itself. If an old trickster came to do this, he might send a handsome guy back to seduce her and give birth to a child who listens to her own words.

At the end of "Terminator 4", neither the "Skynet" machine forces nor John's Human Resistance Army were ended. The war between them is not over. I can't bear to leave while sitting in the theater. A few years later, there may be "Terminator 5", because the desire to criticize reality will not end when the future is portrayed through movies.

"Terminator" discusses the relationship between the past and the future. Another science fiction movie "12 Monkeys" also said that "the future can be changed by correcting the mistakes of the past": a policeman was sent back to the past to find the plague spreader who caused the world to panic. The screenwriter likes this kind of story, maybe because he wants to find some psychological comfort for himself: it doesn't matter if you make a mistake, we can go back and change it. But in the movie "Butterfly Effect", people's thoughts have been cut off: even if you can go back and change something, you can't control future changes. The scene of the melee between humans and machines shown in "Terminator 4" actually tells us that although John had tried to destroy "Skynet" before, "Skynet" even wanted to destroy John’s nine races, but the future will still be his own. The trajectory is evolving and will not change due to past changes.

The absence of Schwarzenegger is not the key (for a short cameo for 1 minute), the key is that the script is too bad. Why should Skynet send Marcus to bring John Connor and send him to kill John Connor. Moreover, how can Skynet in 2018 know about 2029? How is it possible to know that Kyle Rees is John Connor’s father? How could it be possible to use Kyle Rees to lure John Connor into a snare? The details can't stand scrutiny at all, they are reversed in order to reverse. Science fiction works, classics of movie history, and later reduced to pure popcorn movies. The human nature and philosophy discussed in the first two parts are gone, only special effects and big scenes remain. Even the visual effects are not innovative or breakthrough, far less shocking than the liquid robots of "Terminator 2".

Terminator Salvation quotes

  • [after Marcus helps John defeat the Hydrobots, John Connor turns and points his gun at him]

John Connor: They know what you are, even if you don't.

Marcus Wright: Enough! That gun ain't gonna stop shit!

John Connor: Nobody's shot you in the heart, and I see that thing beating a mile a minute!

Marcus Wright: [Suddenly cautious] Kyle Reese. He's in Skynet. You do that, he's dead. I can get you in.

    John Connor: [pauses] How?

[Marcus steps forward into the light. His face is half-mangled, revealing a metal skull underneath]

    Marcus Wright: Look at me.

John Connor: That's why I don't trust you.

Marcus Wright: I'm the only hope you have.

    [pauses]

Marcus Wright: I need to find who did this to me. So do you.

  • [last lines]

Marcus Wright: [thinking] What is it that makes us human? It's not something you can program. You can't put it into a chip. It's the strength of the human heart. The difference between us and machines.

    John Connor: [pause]

    [continues thinking]

John Connor: There is a storm on the horizon. A time of hardship and pain. This battle has been won, but the war against the machines races on. Skynet's global network remains strong, but we will not quit, until all of it is destroyed. This is John Connor. There is no fate, but what we make.
