Form is bigger than content

After reading it, I was really impressed. But most of them are nostalgic for the violent and bloody images, and there is not much sympathy and aftertaste. I was afraid that I had missed something, so I found many comments on the Internet, but I didn't find any special insights.
The combination and alternation of magic and reality, beauty and cruelty culminates with death and rebirth (or fantasy) at the last moment of the film. Darkness and tyrannical heaviness are the style of the film, and it is also the most attractive and wonderful feature. When reviewing the film, this style has become the only prominent place, while other portrayals such as narratives and characters appear to be a bit general and thin.
On the line of reality, the pen and ink focused on showing the captain's dictatorship and brutality. Everyone has paid more attention to this point, and I will not say more here. The existence of guerrillas and rebels seems to be to express the above point, but their own meaning has no concrete manifestation. The part of the cook girl, at first made me think it should be a very important role, but in the end I was a little disappointed. Apart from the visual impact caused by cutting the captain’s mouth, there was no special performance, caring for the little girl. Nor did it achieve a kind of interactive excitement.
In terms of magic, Ophelia, the protagonist girl, seems to always feel a lack of temperament, or a kind of initiative. And when I met Pan Shen, who seemed unkind, I immediately believed what he said, which was somewhat simple and too joking. Regarding the three tests, they should represent bravery, abstinence (resistance to temptation) and dedication (spirit of sacrifice). In the film, they are tests for the princess, but they can also be regarded as tests for people. Originally, the setting for the test should be very brilliant, but when it comes to the film, some of the format is bigger than the content. Especially for the second one, Ophelia seemed to eat the food on the table anyway, and it was obvious to play for the show. As a result of the uncontrollable temptation, it seemed that the two elves were the victims, and it had no effect on Ophelia.
Pan Shen’s maze should refer to Pan Shen’s test (the maze was mentioned at the beginning of the film, which is difficult to get out after walking in, and it has almost no performance or effect in the film). Passing the test means finding the exit. . It is a pity that the director is obsessed with pictures and special effects, atmosphere and violence. Apart from the power of vision, there is no deeper touch. And the interweaving of magic and reality is not as beautiful as it seems.

Pan's Labyrinth quotes

  • Doctor: Let's see how that leg is doing, Frenchie.

Francés: How do you think it's doing? It's fucked up.

  • Mercedes: I'm a coward.

    Pedro: No, you're not.

Mercedes: Yes, I am. A coward - for living next to that son of a bitch, doing his laundry, making his bed, feeding him... What if the doctor's right and we can't win?

Pedro: At least we'll make things harder for that bastard.
