Gilmour del Toro has always been interested in the Spanish Civil War and the dictatorship during the Franco period. For this "Pan's Labyrinth", Gilmour del Toro originally planned to recreate on the basis of his directed "Ghost Boy Academy", but at that time he was busy directing "Blade Warrior 2", so the idea was shelved . Later, "Pan's Labyrinth" reappeared in his mind, and he decided to change his original intention and write "Pan's Labyrinth" as a fairy tale.
Gilmour Del Toro and his friend Alfonso Cuarón, who have known each other for more than 20 years, discussed the idea of creating the film. Cuarón liked his idea very much, and several other producers in the production company hope that Guillermo Del · Toro was able to shoot this film without any restrictions on his creation. Before the film was shot, Gilmour Del Toro organized the notes and sketches of the film into a book. He once left the notes about "Pan Shen's Labyrinth" in the back seat of a taxi, and thought he had lost all his previous work. Later, the taxi driver found Gilmour del Toro after many setbacks and returned this note to him. Gilmour del Toro regarded this incident as a lucky blessing and was more determined to complete the film.

Pan: Me? I've had so many names. Old names that only the wind and the trees can pronounce. I am the mountain, the forest and the earth. I am... I am a faun. Your most humble servant, Your Highness.
