American Mary is the second film directed by the talented Soska twins, whose first was Dead Hooker in a Trunk in '09, and I really appreciate how lighthearted and energetic that work was. Although this film (finished film) surpasses the previous one technically or in any other way, the plot has not even been revealed until it is released in the United States (overseas promotion is a very different story) It was passed on by word of mouth. But there is no doubt that someone will pay for it soon. From a purely artistic point of view, this film is definitely a charming and shocking success. The stunning pictures and track shots created by gorgeous visual effects make the whole film make me admire and awe. Argyle-style use of color, such as red full of aesthetic meaning. Of course, in addition to Argento's, the film is also full of Cronenberg's tunes, the routines of early hospital horror films and the flesh-and-blood sensory stimulation and creepy makeup effects. However, the Soska sisters transformed these so-called master feelings into their own things (not blindly imitating), no matter how you look at it, whether it is now or in the future, this is not a type of film made by any other director. There are also many memorable moments in the film, and these clips are filled with the twin sisters' unique, charismatic appeal and combined with other elements, and may be the best moments of the year (of many films). Among these clips, there is a scene of the heroine attending a party (the index finger loves this part very much, it is a master level), which creates a creepy atmosphere, which makes people anxious and suspicious, but not at all. Plus any unnecessary footage (gore, violent nudity). Also, a scene in the women's room was brilliant and definitely the screaming moment of the year, especially the few shots where the potential victim's eyes were peering through the crack of the door. (I personally think it's great, but unfortunately it lacks stamina) As the story progresses step by step until the final strong, shocking ending, and just the right amount of dark humor. Thanks to those brilliant and poignant lines, the Soska sisters deliver a good script that's plump, three-dimensional, and not lacking in humour, along with some terrifying gore and violence. For this film, the biggest advantage is that there are not too many bloody dismemberment scenes. On the contrary, there are only occasional bloody scenes, and more let the audience imagine those (cut, not appearing) torture scenes. (I don't know if you have thought of a somewhat similar classic horror film called "The Witch of May") Under this method, the appeal of the film has been further strengthened. With the artistic processing of fashion editing in the film, you can not only enjoy the film like a work of art, but also enjoy the top fun of horror films.
But, of course, having a film style isn't enough, especially in a film that's driven primarily by characters. Katherine Isabelle's performance in this film is at its peak (it's really good, some scenes are very similar to the famous Hollywood actress Bette Davis), although I adore her performance in [Mutant Girls], She's never played a role with such star quality. She looks so heartwarming, as a character in the film sometimes she looks pitiful, glamorous and sexy, making people want to pity Xiangxiyu; sometimes she becomes crazy and vicious. Mary is definitely one of the most charismatic, plump characters to come in years. The supporting cast's soul-stirring performances are also outstanding, including a pair of compelling, sexy and crazy twin sisters in a cameo by director Soska's sisters.
After watching this movie, I have a hard time deciding between it and my nonsensical love, which one to choose as my favorite horror movie of the year (the other one is undoubtedly this year's rave reviews "The Cabin in the Woods") . But one thing I can be sure of: The Soska sisters are the future of horror movies. I can't wait to see their next work. Their artistic talent and love for the genre has allowed them to lead the way. To me, they're all top notch, as this terrific, terrifying, darkly humorous film shows. Everyone must be eager to see this movie!
