'Victoria and Abdul': The Success of Personal Biographies or the Failure of Public Films

Gaetano 2022-03-16 09:01:09

As the name "Victoria and Abdul" reflects, this is a successful biopic of an individual based on a true historical event; but as a public release, the film may cause some audiences to fall asleep on the seats in the theater. As far as personal preference is concerned, I appreciate this film very much, the queen reminds me of the princess in "Roman Holiday", but I would like to talk about this film and some of the problems that this film deserves to be improved in this film review, all because I love deeply.

1. Loss of the correct educational function

I am a head accustomed to thinking about things with dialectical thinking, and I have always believed that history has no truth. It is said that the friendship between the queen and the Indian servant was discovered by a female reporter. The film and television people took a picture of this historical story and wanted to present this story to the world, which was a happy event. But the film does not seem to see a good position of the director, which makes the viewers who focus on restoring history and certain historical issues in the film lose their trust in this type of film.

Is the director's design of the image of the British royal family and Indian servants biased? I'm not sure, but this consideration is not perfect. At least some people will have the influence of extreme disgust for the impression of the British royal family, and infinite sympathy for the Indian servants. I suddenly remembered the anti-Japanese drama in China. The Japanese soldiers always fell under the muzzle of the Chinese soldiers one by one, but the Chinese soldiers remained intact. What I can be sure of is that the design of this kind of plot is definitely not to exaggerate some things to express some good things, and it is not an artistic need.

The failure of entertainment

The friendship between Queen Victoria and Abdul is enough to move a large number of moviegoers, which is the result of a personal autobiography; but for a larger group of moviegoers, it is really nothing to be moved, as someone talked about Wu Zetian in his later years It was time to raise male pets in captivity - the Zhang brothers. From the point of view of a lonely queen, that is really cruel and inhumane enough. But from the perspective of our society, this is really nothing. The queen is nostalgic for her power and refuses to give up. Shouldn't she give something? Loneliness is just an external manifestation of her greed and selfishness, so after a little thought, there is no such thing as moving.

Can Abdul and the royal family have more conflicts, and if they create more laughs, will it affect Abdul's image? When you spend money on a movie theater, you seek excitement and joy. If you want to learn knowledge, you can go to a lecture, which is definitely more thorough than a movie.

There are even very few memorable pictures left for the audience. It can be said that the film is like a still water, and the waves are calm.

3. The adaptation of parallel transplantation is not as good as the new creation

How to adapt historical events and novels with film art has been debated in film theory circles. In fact, practice has already given us the answer. The bland adaptations often fail to give the audience new thinking, grasp the essential things, and boldly change the form of the films, but they are well received.

Looking back on the past, various classic films created in different regions and cultures, countries and regions always give people spiritual enjoyment and low-level thinking.

If you can't have the confidence to come up with some innovations, let's review the classics! The classic form cannot be imitated, and the classic story is not worth adapting, but the classic creative form is definitely worth learning. Maybe we should explore some methods and formulate some basic principles to prevent film reviews from becoming criticism instead of praise.

Victoria & Abdul quotes

  • Sir Henry Ponsonby: Breakfast with the Royal Princes of Belgium. 11:00, an audience with the Sultan of Dubai, where Her Majesty will be presented with the Diamond of Oojay. Garden party where Her Majesty will receive Oscar II, King of Sweden and Norway, again, and Queen Liliuokalani.

Queen Victoria: Who on Earth is she?

Sir Henry Ponsonby: A monarch and, uh, sole Queen Regnant of the Kingdom of Hawaii, Your Majesty. Uh, she has composed a song for you on the ukulele. Uh, but we have managed to put her off. Then you will eat with the Prime Minister and at 7:00, the banquet in the state dining room.

Dr. Reid: And your movements, Your Majesty?

Queen Victoria: Nothing to speak of, Dr. Reid.

Dr. Reid: Not even during the day?

Queen Victoria: We last moved on Sunday evening.

Dr. Reid: I fear the celebratory dinners are taking their toll, Your Majesty. Might I suggest some Benger's mixture?

Queen Victoria: I refuse to eat Benger's. It's baby food.

Dr. Reid: But it is imperative, Your Majesty, that the Royal Colon receives a little roughage.

    Queen Victoria: Anything else?

Sir Henry Ponsonby: Um, now, was Your Majesty pleased with the mohur?

    Queen Victoria: What?

Sir Henry Ponsonby: With the mohur, the ceremonial coin. Uh, presented by the two Indian servants.

Queen Victoria: I thought the tall one was terribly handsome.

  • [as Queen Victoria reaches for her stamp, Abdul grabs it for her instead]

    Queen Victoria: Thank you, Mr...

    Abdul Karim: Abdul. Abdul Karim.

[Queen Victoria continues to write her letters]

Abdul Karim: I am always writing.

    [Queen Victoria looks at him]

Abdul Karim: In India, I'm writing, a-all day, every day.

Queen Victoria: So in India, you are not a servant?

Abdul Karim: No. In India, I'm writing in my very big book.

Queen Victoria: You're writing a book?

Abdul Karim: Yes. I'm writing every name, who they are, what they have done. This is my life. Every day, I'm writing, from morning to night.

Queen Victoria: And this is fiction?

Abdul Karim: No. It is the very truth.

Queen Victoria: I don't understand. If you are an author, why are you here, uh, presenting me with the m... uh, with the m...

    Abdul Karim: Mo-Mohur.

    [Queen Victoria nods]

Abdul Karim: It is my humble privilege to serve Her Majesty.

[Queen Victoria smiles, then continues to write her letters]

Abdul Karim: I was the one who chose your carpets.

    Queen Victoria: Carpets?

Abdul Karim: Yes. The Viceroy asked Mr. Tyler, sir, but actually, it was me. Y-you have to have a very good eye for the carpets. Uh, like...

[walks to the carpet in front of the desk]

Abdul Karim: This is a very nice one, for example. Very, very tight knots. The art of carpets, uh, came to India from Persia with the great Emperor Akbar. The s-skill of a carpet is to bring all the different kinds of threads together and weave something we can all stand on.

Queen Victoria: You seem to know a great deal about it.

Abdul Karim: My family were carpet makers, but now I write in the book. Life is like a carpet. We weave in and out to make a pattern.

Queen Victoria: That is a very beautiful image.

Abdul Karim: Look. Here is the bird of freedom, caught forever in the design.

Queen Victoria: So, in India, you are a poet?

Abdul Karim: No. In India, I make a ledger of the prisoners.

Queen Victoria: We are all prisoners, Mr. Karim.
