From a voyeuristic perspective, the film shows the child-seeking process of a middle-aged couple living in New York. Richard, 47, used to be a well-known actor; Rachel, 41, is a writer. When he was young, he adhered to the principle of giving priority to his career and kept writing. The two were busy until middle age and began to work on the man-making plan, and suddenly found that this was a great project. Tossing between home and hospital, life is like a mess that cannot be resolved.
Richard now runs a sauerkraut business and lives in an old-fashioned, cramped, gloomy apartment, like a dog curled up, maybe only feeling like a man when he's walking the dog. He followed his wife's advice step by step, saying that money was not a problem, and instead called his brother to borrow money. In the face of the doctor's rude words, he overturned the propaganda frame irritably, so he had to set it up again. There was a party upstairs late at night, and he could only smash the roof with a book. It seemed that life was always aimed at helpless middle-aged men.
Sadie, the 25-year-old stepdaughter of Richard's brothers, could not complete her university studies. She wanted to be a writer. Confused, she was overwhelmed by her mother's inquiries. She adores her uncle and aunt's past, lives in a big city, and engages in elegant art. She decided to go to her uncle's house, restart her writing, and finish her studies remotely.
After trying artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization failed, the doctor suggested that they have IVF. Considering Rachel's age, in order to improve the success rate, it was recommended to donate eggs to complete the pregnancy. Under the persuasion of her husband, Rachel, who did not accept the reality, began to actively look for a donor. When the young and energetic Sadie moved in, they asked whether Sadie could support their "surrogacy plan", she readily agreed, because she could not find the meaning of life, donating eggs means to Sadie who can not find the direction of life a lot of.
Richard ignited the hope of life, happily inflated the air bed, accompanied his wife and niece to the hospital, and assisted in taking medicine and giving injections. Sadie is also looking forward to the development of her eggs in her aunt's body, and celebrates the anniversary for her busy aunt. But it backfired. Sadie's follicles were not enough, so she increased the dose without permission and had to be admitted to the hospital. In the end, the aid failed.
Sadie moved into the art studio, which was donated by a pair of parents who lost their children. She repeated the life of the two, and the days came and went amid people's anxiety. On the window of the waiting room, an ornament hung with a pattern of a pregnant mother, knocking on the window intentionally or unintentionally, as if knocking on everyone's heart.
In the turbulent society, everyone is walking forward, just like the crowd of people on Halloween. The unfamiliar adoption call gave the two new hope. Although they had been put on pigeons, hope might appear at the next intersection.
