what ordinary people can do

Usually I don't have the patience to watch documentaries, but this one, maybe Gore's reputation has a little influence. The quiet wetland scenery at the beginning gave people the illusion that it was a feature film. Coupled with the poetic language, they were gradually attracted. The whole film is mainly Gore speaking alone, interspersed with some realistic scenes and introductions. This form seems quite boring, but because of his excellent speech, we, the restless students, can honestly read it all.
The language of the film is in-depth and concise, which is what I especially admire. It is a very serious and professional subject, but it can make it interesting for people like me who have little understanding of natural science. It should not be easy. Try to avoid using too many words that are too technical, but not too shallow and unconvincing, and let the audience accept a lot of information without confusing... Winning the Oscar is a real name. As a propaganda film for the public, it was very successful.
I believe that many people who have watched the film will have an urge to do something immediately to support environmental protection. But in fact, it doesn't last long, it's just a temporary enthusiasm. After all, we are just ordinary people. Compared with ordinary people's life, an environmentally friendly life is always a bit inconvenient, such as traveling as a bus, replacing paper towels with handkerchiefs, not turning on air conditioners in summer, not using electric heating equipment in winter, and carrying chopsticks when going out to eat... It's not easy to do. Most of the time, after persevering for a while, I finally gave up bit by bit, and the excitement when I just finished watching it has disappeared.
I can't guarantee how far I will be environmentally friendly, and how long I will persist, and I don't want to be too strict with myself. In the past, I only did a little thing about environmental protection, just like the "negative morality" that Long Yingtai said: go to the supermarket to bring your own shopping bags and use them repeatedly; turn off the lights when you leave the room, and try not to use them if there is enough light. Turn on the lights; turn on the air conditioner less in summer, and use the dryer less when there is a place to dry clothes; use your own chopsticks when ordering takeout or eating instant noodles in the dormitory... and so on. But I don't always remember to do it, and I don't ask myself to be so dedicated every time. Because the requirements for yourself are a little looser, it is easier to stick to it. For example, if you are in a bad mood today and don't want to wash your chopsticks, then use disposable ones. The next time I feel guilty, I resume my eco-friendly life. I have always believed that this approach is useful, even if the impact is very small, it is better than not doing it at all. I don't know if the same is true for others.
I liked the end of the film, listing some behaviors and telling us how these people should "act". One of them is to the effect: call the power company and ask if they use new energy, and if not, ask him why he doesn't. I definitely wouldn't make this call, but a very cute and stubborn old man suddenly appeared in front of me. He questioned the government and related units over and over again, and took the trouble to explain the danger of environmental protection to people. It has been said more than 1000 times, but it is always full of enthusiasm and a sense of responsibility to the whole society.

An Inconvenient Truth quotes

  • Al Gore: Ultimately, this question comes down to this. Are we, as Americans, capable of doing great things even though they are difficult? Are we capable of rising above ourselves and above history? Well, the record indicates that we do have that capacity. We formed a nation, we fought a revolution, and brought something new to this earth, a free nation guaranteeing individual liberty. America made a moral decision that slavery was wrong, and that we could not be half free and half slave. We, as Americans, decided that of course women should have the right to vote. We defeated totalitarianism and won a war in the Pacific and the Atlantic simultaneously. We desegregated our schools. And we cured fearsome diseases like polio. We landed on the moon! The very example of what's possible when we are at our best. We worked together in a completely bipartisan way to bring down communism. We have even solved a global environmental crisis before, the hole in the stratospheric ozone layer. This was said to be an impossible problem to solve, because it's a global environmental challenge requiring cooperation from every nation in the world. But we took it on. And the United States took the lead in phasing out the chemicals that caused that problem. So now we have to use our political processes in our democracy, and then decide to act together to solve those problems. But we have to have a different perspective on this one. It's different from any problem we have ever faced before.

  • Al Gore: I've probably given this slideshow a thousand times. I would say at least a thousand times. Nashville to Knoxville to Aspen and Sundance. Los Angeles and San Francisco. Portland, Minneapolis. Boston, New Haven, London, Brussels, Stockholm, Helsinki, Vienna, Munich, Italy and Spain and China, South Korea, Japan. I guess the thing I've spent more time on than anything else in this slideshow is trying to identify all those things in people's minds that serve as obstacles to them understanding this. A-And whenever I feel like I've identified an obstacle, I try to take it apart, roll it away. Move it. Demolish it, blow it up. I set myself a goal. Communicate this real clearly. The only way I know to do it is city by city, person by person, family by family. And I have faith that pretty soon, enough minds are changed that we cross a... a threshold.
