Only the carriage and the illuminated stairs are reliable

Some people on the Internet say that the Benben brothers kept these dramas in a drawer for 25 years, and finally took them out and made a collection of these scattered stories. Therefore, some people say that these six stories are not coherent and belong to a collection of short stories. In fact, it seems to me that these six stories are coherent. Of course it does not mean this coherent overall western style, but the coherent theme of the movie, that is death. This movie is somewhat different from other Coen Brothers movies. It contains the style and elements of the Coen Brothers in the past. It is still black humor, still satirical aesthetics, and even has old stalks with hands covering the face. At the same time, this movie has different People, different things, different elements, to express the Coen brothers' ultimate thinking about death. In the first part, the white cowboy is invincible. The second part is that the stupid thief has escaped the trial but cannot escape the misjudgment. The third part is that the bird’s performance is unable to change the situation of the hen who is not as good as the count. The old gold rush singer who was put down with his bird's egg fights back, and the desperate immigrant girl in the fifth part thus loses the possibility of living with cowboys in the future. Impermanence is everywhere, and accidents happen at any time. No one can control everything. No one can run and finally board the sixth part of the carriage. In the sixth part, Moustache and his assistant drove three people in a carriage. The rational and mean Frenchman, the devout and upright Christian, the free and mindless old hunter. Rational thinking? Religious belief? Whatever happens? How do people face the world where the previous five stories happened? Which of these three attitudes is right? Which can succeed? The Coen brothers didn't know, they used their moustaches to express their opinions, and the moustaches said, how do I know, I just observe. Human beings are so small that they can't even do anything about the first five parts of the world. How can they find the answer in the sixth story? The faint light on the stairs contrasted with the dimness of the surrounding hotels. The Coen brothers gave their brother's attitude, that is, like a rational Frenchman, wearing a hat, smiling, and calmly walked into the door and stepped onto the stairs. Step into that light. The Coen Brothers movie may not be a particularly good movie. Different people have different tastes and opinions, but I personally feel that this movie is different from the previous Coen brothers' movies, but a different taste. Well, how do I say, I think: Although people like to listen to stories, this is not one A Cohen-style movie that tells a story. This is a Cohen-style movie that exposes the story. It clearly points out that we are actually in the story.

Life is impermanent, walk and sing. Death is like the wind, always with me. I like the sadness and helplessness of the third story, the abrupt end of love in the fifth story, and the lonely gold digger who loves life.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs quotes

  • Trapper (segment "The Mortal Remains"): So... him on the roof, he was wanted?

Englishman (segment "The Mortal Remains"): Oh, Mr. Thorpe was very much wanted... judging by what the are paying for him!

[the Englishman and the Irishman chuckle]

Trapper (segment "The Mortal Remains"): What did he do?

Englishman (segment "The Mortal Remains"): I don't know. Does it matter?

    [addressing the Lady]

Englishman (segment "The Mortal Remains"): Just as you said, Madame, there are two kinds of people. In our business they are: dead or alive.

  • Englishman (segment "The Mortal Remains"): I must say... it's always interesting watching them after Clarence has worked his art. Watching them negotiate... the passage.

Frenchman (segment "The Mortal Remains"): Passage?

Englishman (segment "The Mortal Remains"): From here to there. To the other side. Watching them try to make sense of it, as they pass to that other place. I do like looking into their eyes as they try to make sense of it.

    [stares at the Frenchman]

Englishman (segment "The Mortal Remains"): I do.

    [stares at the Lady]

Englishman (segment "The Mortal Remains"): I do.

Trapper (segment "The Mortal Remains"): Try to make sense of what?

Englishman (segment "The Mortal Remains"): [stares at the Trapper] All of it.

Lady (segment "The Mortal Remains"): And do they ever... succeed?

Englishman (segment "The Mortal Remains"): [smiles] How would I know? I'm only watching!
