Fantasy is always beautiful, it allows us to escape from reality to obtain temporary relief of the mind. This is the biggest function of this film for me, and it is also the main clue for the development of this film's story.
The plot of the film is actually not complicated, the film does not win with the story, and the highlights are mostly in some details. The following content contains serious spoilers, if you don't like it, please skip the following four paragraphs.
Ben, an art school student, dreams of becoming a painter. After breaking up with his girlfriend, he began to suffer from insomnia all night, in his own words: "eight hours a day more, life increased by a third". For Ben, who was in pain all day long, the extra time was not a generous gift from God, but a form of torture. In order to get rid of the extra time that was difficult to arrange, Ben applied for a job as a night shift cleaner in the supermarket, and the
wonderful story unfolded. Every night in the supermarket, Ben used the unique imagination of his literary youth. In fantasy, time can be frozen at will. He walks freely in this frozen space, recording the frozen beauty with his own brush. In the fantasy world, Ben no longer feels lonely and time is no longer long. He seems to have found the best way to relieve pain.
until I fell in love with Sharon.
Sharon is the cashier at the supermarket, and her kiss helps Ben regain his sense of sleep. While reaping a new love, Ben also received a call from the gallery owner, saying that he wanted to hold an art exhibition for him - this was Ben's greatest wish ever. A seemingly beautiful new life is coming one after another, but unexpected changes occur. At the supermarket owner's birthday party, his ex-girlfriend forcibly kissed Ben, but at that moment, Sharon ran into him and left in anger. Just as Sharon went out, Ben stopped time again. The explanation didn't help, and Sharon saw exactly the second Ben was kissed. He knows that time can be fast-forwarded and frozen, but it cannot be reversed. What happened can never be undone. Insomnia has returned to Ben's life again. The phone call from the gallery is just a prank by a colleague. The only good news is, The gallery owner said, "Since you're here, you might as well put the painting to see"...
The scene where Ben and Sharon kiss in the snow at the end of the film is one of the most romantic scenes I've ever seen in a movie. I haven't seen a lot of love movies, so there's not much room for comparison, it's purely personal experience.
In life, people will always encounter various kinds of pain. Fantasy doesn't help you drive away the pain, but it allows you to ignore it for a while. I feel that way. Sometimes escapism and indulging in fantasy is not because of cowardice, but a kind of wisdom we need. In this real world where we are helpless, fantasy is the passport of fantasy.
I was hooked from the first minute of the film until the last line of subtitles rolled onto the screen, and more than 100 minutes passed without realizing it. Movies are a fantasy, and the time in fantasy always passes quickly, just like Ben's frozen space in the supermarket.
The film is adapted from a short film of the same name nominated by the British director Sean Ellis in 2004 and nominated for the Academy Award for Best Short Film. This is Sean Ellis's first feature film, but the film's wonderful imagination and frequent stop-motion shots The use and the unmarked space transfer skills all show the director's dexterity in controlling feature films.
Today is the weekend or Qixi Festival, if you happen to be alone at home doing nothing, you might as well watch this movie. As a friendly reminder, it is best to watch the subtitles at the end of the film with patience, there are surprises in the middle.
